ASPCA Complete Guide to Cats: Everything You Need to Know About Choosing and Caring for Your Pet

You must buy this book if you are a new cat owner (and probably if you are a veteran cat owner, but I'm not one, so I can't say). There is so much useful advice in this book and it is written by a legitimate organization, so you can trust what is said in it. The pictures are awesome and it has a guide in the beginning that describes the various cat breeds and their typical personalities, energy levels, etc. For less than $20, you can't go wrong purchasing this book.

Very informative, thorough, and easy to read. If you want information on just one subject it's easy to quickly find it. It's an interesting read as well. I can't believe how much I like reading it and how much I've learned already. I recommend it to anyone with cats or thinking about getting one. I've had several cats in the past and I wish I had read this book before I had any of them. This is a must-read for anyone who loves their cats and wants them to have a high-quality life.

This is really a great book. I purchased it in 2005 and I am constantly looking through it. The material and factual, accurate and very useful. It remains probably 98% complete and useful to this day. The only issue with it is that it was published in 1999 and is now a bit outdated. There a few recent breeds that have become popular since this was published that are, of course, not covered in this book. Most notably it does not have information on the Savannah Cat breed. So as good as this book is, I would like to see an updated version come out soon.

This was a really good book. The author did a good job at explaining the behaviors of cats. He also points out which breeds are good in which homes. The color pictures are just beautiful... and some are extremely funny. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has even a smidgen of interest in cats. There are so many breeds that I did not know even existed! He also shows pictures and descriptions of mixed breed cats and even points out the benefits of spaying and neutering! So full of information. It had me in awe and I thought I already knew alot. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

We have 4 dogs, 3 ducks and 3 dwarf goats on our ranch and just added 2 kittens to round things out. Being a new cat owner I wanted to learn the right way to care for the kittens, so I bought this book. I found it very informative and helpful and I really learned a lot from the well laid out pages. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about cats.

My niece (adult) just got her first cat. I sent her this guide and she called the same day it was delivered. She said she was learning things from it and was quite pleased with the gift.

We've owned Cats for 35 years and have found this book to be of significant importance. It is clear, concise and gets to the point without confusing terminology. The photographs are wonderfully descriptive. One caveat: buy this book and thoroughly read it through before adopting a kitten or cat. On many occasions,the author cautions on the importance of making a commitment to the responsibility of owning a pet, and the many duties inherent with caring for one of the most beautiful creations.

This is a very good introductory to cats. It covers a broad range of topics with a good amount of detail. I am an animal sciences major and we used this as a textbook in one of our courses, so that should tell you something about the quality of information. There are definite points of view expressed in this guide, but I've found them to be in line with everything else I have learned from the veterinary community as well as animal shelters. People may disagree with some of the stances taken by the ASPCA, but there is good evidence for those expressed in this book. The companion guide for dogs is identical in format, and some of the information in the health section is almost word-for-word the same. The two are very comparable in quality.
