On December 7th, 1941, 'a date which will live in infamy', 353 Japanese fighters and bombers launched a brutal surprise attack on the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Nearly 2500 U.S. serviceman lost their lives on that fateful morning, and a scandalized nation gave their full support for America's historic entry into the Second World War. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the brilliant Commander-in-Chief of Japan's Combined Fleet, was the mastermind behind the attack. Marked for death by radical Japanese nationalists for his outspoken opposition to any attack on the United States, what dramatic turn of events could have possibly compelled him to orchestrate the infamous early morning raid? Produced for the 70th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, this powerful, acclaimed and action-packed motion picture event will both thrill and surprise you. Now, discover the amazing truth behind one of the most pivotal events of WWII... Review: Superb tale of Pearl Harbor and Midway, from the Japanese Viewpoint - I have seen snippets of this incredible film on YouTube over the past few years, but I didn't have the whole thing until just now. This film, about the great Japanese admiral who led (albeit reluctantly!) the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Imperial fleet in the Battle of Midway, is well filmed, extremely well acted, and well constructed. It reminds me of "Tora, Tora, Tora," which I have always considered the greatest of the Pearl Harbor movies--but this one definitely ties with that film. We are given a lengthy and in-depth examination of the circumstances and internal conflicts that led up to the attack, as well as Yamamoto's gallant efforts to make his government realize the mistake they were making. I think this would be an excellent companion to "Tora, Tora, Tora," and I came away with a great respect for Admiral Yamamoto. Review: Good movie, special effects goog - Interesting perspective of WW2 from Adm Yamamato, well worth watching. I don't understand the complaints about poor quality and poor special effects. At least on Blu Ray the video quality is excellent and the special effects are pretty good. No problem playing it on a run of the mill blu-ray player in the US. Highly recommended.

Loved it.
Very good biographical movie on Yamamoto, and the period just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Greatly acted although the CGI of the air battles makes them seem slightly cartoonish. Those who have studied the Pacific War will also notice the glaring errors at Midway. First the Japanese carriers dod not have a full deck of aircraft when they were hit by the dive bombers and second, there is no record of a Kamikaze attack on Saratoga. That aside, this was a great movie to watch.

The DVD is entertaining, and covers aspects of Admiral Yamamoto's life and career that I had not been aware of. It is interesting throughout and I feel it is well worth the money. Had he lived and had his policies been followed, Japan would have been much better off. They would have "sued for peace."

Movie was so-so. While it was interesting to see the Pacific War from the Japanese perspective, the movie was complete revisionist history. Yamamoto was not a family man. The movie depicts him as a loving father and husband, but if you read his biography, he's usually spending his time with geishas. The action sequences were nice, but inaccurate as well based off actual events from Midway (.e.g no kamekaze attack on an US carrier occurred during Midway). Lastly, the "reasons" for why Japan bombed Pearl Harbor was touched upon early in the movie and it was pretty hilarious (e.g. Japan unable to defeat China because the US was feeding it weapons and material).

Poor picture quality, passable movie
2 stars for the disk itself. Plays fine in my Blu Ray player, but clarity of the picture is not "blu ray"/1080P at all, not even 720. Really grainy pic and upscaling (normally very good) on my 4K player and 4K TV did not help. Expected MUCH better for a $16+ DVD. 3 stars for the movie. Nothing really new here, at all, really just a basic overview of the man, political events, and the major battles. Movie also tries to show the war from the aviator and civilian perspectives but doesn't really get there. In retrospect I would rent and not buy (if possible, but not avail for rent anywhere, hence why I bought). CGI quality is not horrible (think 80's flicks) but far from excellent. Bottom line, disappointed as a history buff, but maybe ok to anyone with limited or no knowledge of WWII.

This is an excellent film. Koji Yakusho a fine actor and leading man carries the movie in a performance oddly reminiscent of Gregory Peck. When on the screen, ones eyes are drawn to his character's words and actions. My only wish is that this movie were better known in the West.

Great film! Very well done. Great acting, fascinating perspective on things. Beautiful cinematography. Engaging throughout, relatable characters. Just so my fellow friends from across the Atlantic are aware, this does not play in region 1 (i.e. USA) DVD players, unless you use a workaround of some kind. (The DVD is tied to region 2, which includes Europe, the UK, and Japan, among other places.) Here are at least two options I'm aware of: 1) Use VLC player (free download) to open and play the DVD on your computer or other device (that can be hooked up to a DVD player or has one internally). It can play the DVD regardless of its region. (That's what I did.) 2) Have your DVD player switch regions. Unfortunately, you have a limited number of times you can switch regions (only maybe 3 or 4 times?).
