Is it exactly like the the drops version only without the preservative?

I think so. Although the ingredients are not completely specified, unlike the drops which list a preservative most of the contents of the gel are 980 milligrams of honey per gram of product. And the precautions say " do not use if you are hypersensitive to bee products or food gums". So I infer that the other 20 milligrams are food gums. Hope that helps. BTW it stings like hell, but only for about 5-10 seconds and works for me.... I do wish they had buffered the gel which would likely reduce the sting.

Yes the lid is attached to a ring below it. When you undo the lid for the first time the seal on the ring breaks then the ring can be removed
