There were several masters of animation during Hollywoods golden era. Of the top two geniuses, one created elaborate fairy tales and ornate feature-length fantasias the other guy was Tex Avery. He just wanted to make you laugh. Having already been integrally involved in the development of Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros., Avery moved to MGM in 1941 to create a set of comedy masterpieces that defined a new slapstick style for animation, inspiring cartoonists, comedians and filmmakers for decades to come. Averys unit at Metro Goldwyn Mayer was all about breaking the fourth wall, shattering expectations and making audiences fall down with laughter. His one-shot masterpieces, including Bad Luck Blackie, Red Hot Riding Hood and Symphony in Slang, have proven themselves pure gold. Bei der Warner Bros und später bei der Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hat Tex Avery ein irrationales- manche werden sagen: surrealistisches- Universum ersonnen, in dem die ... Grenzen des möglichen und gesunden Menschenverstandes gesprengt werden. Mit seiner schonungslosen Art, Tabus zu verletzen, mit seinem Hang zu Wortspielen und an die Marx Brothers gemahnenden Doppeldeutigkeitenhat Tex Avery dem Hollywood-Trickfilm eine neue Dimension verliehen." Nachdem Tex Avery (1908-1980, damals noch unter dem Namen Fred Avery) von 1936-1941 für Warner Bros. gearbeitet und hier schon zeitlose Cartoonfiguren wie Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck und Elmar Fudd miterfunden hatte, ging er zu MGM und schuf von 1942-1955 in 84 Cartoons seine abgedrehte und völlig überzogene Cartoonwelt. Aus dieser Zeit stammen (mit einer Ausnahme, nämlich "Symphony in Slang", der erst in seiner letzten Phase bei Universal entstand) die Filme der dreiteiligen amerikanischen BluRay-Reihe "Screwball Classics", die sich auch auf europäischen Playern abspielen lassen. Volume 1 der Reihe beginnt in der frühen Phase dieser Zusammenarbeit und präsentiert 19 seiner Kurzfilme mit einer Gesamtlaufzeit von ca 138 Minuten. Auf der Disc enthalten sind folgende Klassiker: 1. Red Hot Riding Hood (Mai 1943) 2. Who killed Who? (Juni 1943) 3. What`s Buzzin Buzzard? (November 1943) 4. Betty Baseball (April 1944) 5. Daredevil Droopy (März 1951) Bei der Zusammenstellung wurde also darauf geachte, Filme aus der ganzen MGM-Phase zu präsentieren und all seine bekannten Charaktere wie Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, Red Hot Hood und die Wölfe, Spike sowie George & Junior gleichberechtigt auftreten zu lassen. Besser kann man es eigentlich kaum machen. Das Einzige was fehlt, wäre ein bißchen Bonusmaterial mit Hintergrundinfos, das es aber leider nicht gibt. Aber ohne Zweifel werde ich mir die anderen Volumes auch noch besorgen.

Tex Avery is a legend in the cartoon world and this collection is some of his best, crazy, and laughable cartoons one can buy and the 4K is just great! I'm glad I have the physical discs because just remember that if you bought the movies on digital, they're only good until the licenses to watch them expire and you no longer own the movies! It's true. Go look it up!

The man who inspired HB produces some of the most classic cartoons, these are timeless classics worth the purchase a must for those who enjoy the classics.
