when reapplying the same sealant, is it necessary to first clean off the sealant from last time?

I would clean off the sealant before applying new just because the old sealant may have become contaminated. If it has some grit in it, it could affect the seal. Maybe overkill, but I don't like to second guess seals on propane lines.
