Large is 36-38". XL is 40-42". **Q: How do i indicate my preferred size on my order** A: There is no place to indicate size! **Q: does the elastic around the leg opening hold up (and keep things in)?** A: The elastic does hold up, but keeping things in, unless you are on the small side, I would say no! I have bought Hanes underwear for years and have been happy. However the last couple years they must be trying to save money by skimping on the amount of material they use in the crotch. The crotch width now is about what you would expect in women's underwear! I find these briefs very uncomfortable to wear! Buyer beware on these. **Q: No option to pick my size???
