Are the metal pieces under this desk's surfaces strong? (Those pieces on my old desk are thin and don't actually support the surfaces which is weird.)

Yes desk overall is sturdy...the metal is not flimsy or cheap... even the wood on the desk is sturdy.. you wouldnt want one to fall on your foot..

What size are the cable holes? I’m hoping to add a desktop power source that is meant to go in the hole and want to make sure it will fit.

I can’t tell you an exact diameter, but I can tell you it’ll absolutely work for your needs. I handed this desk down to my partner and got another similar one and we both have half a dozen cables down each cable hole! Please see the attached photo of one of his (this desk). A bunch of smaller cables (like phone chargers and laptop cables) or a desktop cable and a few smaller ones will absolutely fit. There are two size options on the plastic piece for each cable hole.
