Perfect English Muffins
This toaster is an anachronism in our kitchen. It has a mechanical timer, a lever to raise and lower the bread, and a style that looks like it belongs in the 1940s. Quite a contrast from our 21st Century appliances with glowing digital readouts, touchscreens and computerized controls. I love it simply because it makes the best toast and english muffins that I have had in a long time. The secret is simple. It is very powerful. 1250 Watts is uncommon for a 2-slice toaster, but that is what it takes to make good toast. I have not been able to find a toaster this powerful in almost 2 decades. Don't worry, I can hold my hand over the top of the toaster while it is on and feel just a slight amount of heat. It is all focused on the bread. As for the toaster, it is rock solid construction and attractive in its own retro way. My wife is adjusting to the manual features. To make toast requires two extra steps. First, drop in the bread, lower the bread into the toaster by raising the lever and then turn the timer dial to the desired setting. Once the toast is done, the toast must be manually raised by pushing the lever back down. I prefer the 2 minute setting. My english muffin comes out brown and crispy on the outside and still soft inside. Just perfect. Bread toasts evenly and quickly. As with a toaster with this much wattage, toast can range from slightly warm to completely black on the outside. And the bread inside will still be soft. I'll take perfect toast over blue lights and automated gimmicks any day. 2024 Update I just used this toaster just now and it is still working great. It makes the best toast ever. I had to look it up- I bought my Dualit Toaster in March 2011. It shines up looking like new and still works like new after 13 1/2 years. Great investment.

Good solid toaster.
I have a love-hate relationship with toasters. My husband, for some strange reason, likes burnt toast. Perhaps this is why the typical $20-$30 toaster only lasts us a couple of years. I have not had any luck finding replacement elements for these less sturdy toasters, which really bugs me since it should be so easy fix something so simple Last month we were browsing through a kitchen store and I saw the Dualit. Its sturdy looks caused me to muse that perhaps hubby couldn't break this one. However, the price tag just about gagged me. But, when we got home I did some research, read many reviews and was intrigued - especially after finding that I could buy a "used" one on Amazon for about 60% of the new price. Now that we've had it for 3 weeks I'm very happy with my purchase. It's definitely sturdy! I like the manual lever for lowering/raising the toast - helps to keep the toast warm if you can't get to it right away, and enables removal of the toast if you see that it's done before the timer is finished (or I can set it to "burn to a crisp" and take out my toast halfway through the cycle and let hubby's toast go all the way to cremation.) I like the rotary timer so you can check the time remaining. I love that I can set it to toast just one piece and only the left side will heat up - or that I can set it for "bagel" and only the inside will toast. I like that it puts out 1250 Watts, so it doesn't take forever to make toast and I like the fact that the crumbs actually do fall into the crumb tray, which can be easily removed - no more shaking the toaster to get the crumbs to fall out through the top. And finally, the little surprise on the bottom - a plate stating "Hand build in Great Britain by Paul" so now we feel so classy because we can have Paul make our toast! I'll update in a year or so if anything changes, but so far I'm hopeful that "Paul" will age with us!

Quality Toaster
Really happy with the toaster. Build quality is fantastic, and it evenly cooks the toast. Love the manual handle for popping up/down the toast as well.

Uneven toasting. burns bread
My first Dualit lasted 20 years. I had no hesitation is buying a second. However, right from start I had trouble with getting bread toasted. Burning or not toasting evenly. Don't buy. Amazon further gives a short window for returning. I wish I would have just gone to Bed Bath and Beyond.

Beautiful toaster, but I think all the money goes to the looks and not the performance
It's a beautified toaster, looks and feels solid but for the money it doesn't toast evenly and I have trouble fitting my bagels in. I like that you can lift the toast out to check on it, and it becomes necessary since the bottom always gets more toasted than the top so I often have to flip the toast to make it even. When I'm rushing though, I just get uneven toast which for what they charge is unfortunate.

High quality & ease of use
Plain, simple, back to basics, mechanical toaster, user friendly and NOT made in China!! High quality product. We are finding the "2" setting on the dial is the best average setting for toast. It's great that you can move the knob/lever to check on your toasting progress without interrupting the heating elements. Attractive enough to leave on the countertop. It's worth spending a little extra for the quality you will get.

I wish all the home appliences are made like this!
I purchased Dualit two slice toater when it was special sale with $99- at Amazon without paying S&H and I am very happy. A week before the purchse, I got Cuisnart toaster CPT180 and I was totally unhappy with that flashy looking tin can of stainless brushed finish. I was alittle worried about the lack of thickness adjustment of Dualit but it does not bother as much as I feared. The intensity of the heat is enough to do the quick job that seems to seal the moisture in. In other words, toasts come out crispy outside and moist inside. This toaster reminds me of 90's Volvo 240DL and MBS SL that the factories spent so much money for besic structures and invisible foundation. Nothing fancy yet very honestly and massively made while it did not offer fancy looking or features. But there is a quality you can see and feel when you touch as the time goes by. I tend to appreciate that kind of sane build quality instead of number of features. (I enjoy hi-end 2 channel stereo sound a lot more than 6.1 channel surround. I paid several times more for the products but hey! being just normal is very expensive! That is the way it is!) The simple old fashioned ticking timer of Dualit works perfectly so much more than the electronic sensors. It does not offer the bells and whistles that cost less for manufactureres to make. This it very sane, normal product, built with conscience, and built to last. Too bad some people do not see the value of it. I like the product very much.

Love love love this toaster
Love love love this toaster, we had the same one in the UK, this version seems to toast the bread very slowly, we have to toast it for three minutes to get it brown, perhaps this is more to do with the UK voltage system?

Expensive but worth it. Product was exactly as described.
Great Toaster-hopefully it's solid construction will mean retiring it will be many years away.
