Amazon Fresh Decaf Colombia Whole Bean Coffee, Medium Roast, 12 Ounce

Being an elder person, my wife and I need to reduce caffeine intake, so we pair 1/2 full taste coffee with a decaf. Problem is most decaf coffee doesn't have much taste. As a chemist having done some flavor studies, I am sensitive to even subtle shifts in flavor expressions. This whole bean Arabica Columbia decaf coffee is wonderful. Upon opening the package, the light nutty aroma signaled me immediately that a step-up selection was now before me. Did a drip grind and paired it with Costco premium grind for that optimum flavor cup. Adding some organic half and half and one then has the height of delight. No need for flavored additives. It stands on its own needing nothing else. My search for a wonderful, good flavor coffee with reduced caffeine is now in my pantry and steel air-tight container for the ground portion. Now on to the beans. An image is provided to better understand their roast. Since this is a medium roast, the color of the beans varies somewhat lighter and some darker. Only one exploded bean was found and only one with a tan fleck in the cut. These are under roasted beans that puff like popcorn and deliver bitter taste (also known as Quakers). That is not the case here. The beans were dried then roasted under tight operational conditions. And the brewed cup was excellent even for a decaf. Chewing one of the beans revealed a faint but real nutty flavor, amazing. Since I review many bags of coffee for Amazon Vine, I see so many with moderate level of defects. Not so for this decaf whole bean. And so when buying for myself, this is top shelf for the decaffeinated portion of my brew. However, don't look for Organic labels. The only way to achieve this level of origin flavor preservation for such a tasty cup is solvent extraction of the caffeine. Supercritical CO2 Extraction is the top of the flavor preserving hierarchy, but cost is quite high. My best guess is Ethyl Acetate, or the Fermented Sugarcane Process. My palate confirms it. The only negative is there are gaps in time when this coffee is not available. Yet I wait to purchase more knowing their Amazons Quality Team is working with their sources to get the beans and the roast right. And this bag after waiting 3 months, presents with excellence. I hate to say this, and obviously everyone might not agree, but I like the taste of this better than my decaf Starbucks pikes place whole beans that I bought the other day

For a decaf, this one surprised me in a good way. The beans smell fresh, grind evenly, and brew into a smooth, medium‑bodied cup that’s easy to sip any time of day. It has that classic Colombian profile — mild sweetness, a little nuttiness, and a clean finish that doesn’t feel flat like some decafs do. My only complaint is the taste can come off slightly muted compared to regular coffee, but that’s pretty normal for decaf. Overall, it’s a solid, affordable option if you want a mellow cup without the caffeine crash.

It tastes less dark than it looks which is a benefit for me as I am trying to find a lighter decaf roast. It plays well when used to make personal half caff mixes with things like Starbucks Sunsera and Veranda. I would say if anything it is very "inoffensive" in flavors? There's very little of anything beyond what I would call "coffee." There's no particular standout sweetness, nuttiness or anything to it. I am surprised by this given how visibly dark it is compared to another decaf roast I have. For the very, very competitive price at 12oz and how fresh the package seems (no roast date but "expiration" is June 2026, so this package might be only a few months old as of September 2025) I think I'd add this in as a tool to make half caff (or perhaps quarter caff or other mix rates) or otherwise if I just want to taste the most inoffensive coffee sometimes. Being whole bean rather than ground makes it even better. Decaf coffee degrades faster due to the way decaf processes require the beans to be "opened up" before they undergo decaf. Whole beans means there's a lot less surface area exposed to the beans and the highly competitive pricing for small packages means only ordering (and opening) them up when I'm running low on them so that'll reduce degradation more. I like to buy beans and grind them myself. This is a good medium blend. Not strong enough for espresso, but very good in a regular drip machine. Because I have a good grinder, I mix my beans depending on my mood each day. I like darker coffee in the morning, and I have mixed this less expensive medium coffee bean in with a darker caffeinated bean, and I do not taste any difference. To be sure, this is not the quality of the kicking horse decaffeinated coffee that I love, but for the price, I am happy with this blend especially because I am always mixing my beans. I don't drink a lot of coffee at night, but if I do, it has to be decaffeinated, and I find this one fits the bill. I should say that it makes a great cappuccino and latte especially if mixed with the darker beans. I will buy it again when it is on sale.

This coffee is labeled "medium" roast but it is not medium - it is definitely a dark roast. The flavor is much closer to a dark French roast than to any medium I've ever had. The flavor is mediocre. It's not bitter, but also nothing interesting about it, just a vague "roasty" type flavor that leans toward over-roasted. It's pretty smooth, if only because there isn't much flavor intensity. Just kinda mild, dark (maybe medium-dark, if I'm generous) roast taste. Spend a few extra bucks and get something of real quality.

Very flavorful, makes great espresso. I’ve already bought a second bag, this will be my ‘go-to’ !

I've been trying different types of coffee for quite some time, and have never been able to find a great tasting coffee and most are very expensive. So I have up and bought a cheaply priced coffee and gave Amazon's decaf a try, and wow was I surprised. It has that bold coffee flavor I'm looking for and it very smooth. I'm found my coffee and I'm sticking to it and saving money too.
