Quality Study Guide
EDIT: While I still think this book is useful, the actual Praxis test was much more difficult than the practice tests (one in the book, and one online). This text should not be considered comprehensive, but it is helpful to read through when studying. I trained as an art historian, and got a 191 on the Praxis. I would definitely say the emphasis of the test is art history and terms associated with art. There was a fair amount of art making and safety in the classroom as well, which this guide prepared me for, because my background isn't in art making. I bought this guide to fill in gaps in my knowledge of art making, since I trained as an art historian. It provided just that: a 16 page, simple presentation of the basics I'll encounter in the art classroom (tools, safety, practices, names of some techniques and media, guidance about materials and media). It is, by no means, an exhaustive presentation, but it seems to be enough to prepare you for Praxis test questions. I briefly reviewed the art history section, which is organized loosely by movement (Impressionism, Fauvism), period (Gothic, Art Deco), and culture (Egypt, Mesoamerican), and highlights terms corresponding to art areas (impasto, wooden sculpture). As another reviewer commented, the presentation isn't particularly structured. Like the art making section, it's more of a free-flowing narrative. While I understand the desire for a clear presentation of art history, that would be entirely useless for a study guide. If you don't know art history, you only have time for a quick primer, which is what this guide provides. If you want properly presented art history in greater depth, consult Stokstad or Kleiner or another textbook used for survey courses. What I particularly liked was the study and test taking tips, and the practice tests provided. The study guide has a practice test at the end, followed by answers and their explanations. However, the guide also provides a link to a bucket-load of additional resources: another 100 question long practice test (more difficult than the one in the book), further study guidance and support, and a book's worth of resources and recommendations for actual teaching!

Don't waste your money
Useless. This book is poorly written and unorganized. There are even misspelled terms. One of the sample questions gives an incorrect answer. specifically the answer Tempera. Some of the questions were about teaching style, not art content, and thus not relevant to the exam. Also, the paragraphs on mediums, artists, etc, often contain esoteric information that is not part of the core knowledge of art. There are no images or examples of important works, etc. It is also really overpriced. You would be better off reading an art history textbook. I teach college level students and some of the works this book points out as relevant I have never heard of and are not typically included in your traditional survey course. Also, the paragraphs on artists are narrow in scope. The ETS Praxis site has a better guide with sample questions and information about what you will need to know, and it is free. Then you can go research the details with a quick google search.

great review of art history and art making
Needed to review to pass the Praxis exam to be a certified art teacher. Great for art history and art making review. Needed more examples for the critical analysis section. Had lots of tips for test prep and test anxiety for those who might need that.
