Tertia

There is such a range of cool material and subtleties in this album. I cannot get some of the tracks and riffs out of my head and I keep wanting to come back to it, which means it is good (in my view, anyhow). Worth checking out on Last-fm, which is where I first heard the of the band, the tracks and what prompted me to buy the album. Also check out the albums by "This Will Destroy You" and "Daturah".

I came to know of Caspian through other bands in the, for want of a better word, "post-rock" scene. This album is both like and not like the "the four trees" and "you are the conducter". It is without question a more mature and acomplished record. The mp3 version i have heard is not the best quality version, i.e. the cd/vinyl copy. I have ordered the vinyl version, but, naturally is delayed.... I'm not going to go through all the tracks individually like some reviewers do. I am not worthy enough to do that!.I am a believer in post-rock having variety, as many critics say it can go no further. This record proves it can. Very layered, with parts of heavy distortion and crashing drums that contrast with many ambient, soft moments. Standout moments include "the raven" and my personal favorite "Sycamore" A track that Caspian have been using as a set closer for a while, and wanted to get on record. Fittingly, it closes Tertia. Although i prefer the live version, this one works just as well in ending a supurb album.

Caspian präsentieren mit "Tertia" Output Nr. 3.Zu den Speerspitzen des Post Rocks gehörten sie bisher nicht, dennoch gelang ihnen mit dem zweiten Album "The Four Trees" ein mehr als gelungenes Stück Musik, das problemlos mit den Großen mithalten kann.Kritiker werden mit Sicherheit die Austauschbarkeit aufgrund des riesigen Angebots an Post Rock-Bands bemängeln, aber dieses spontane Urteil müssen sich noch zig andere Bands gefallen lassen und lässt sich fast schon als standartisierten Textbaustein vieler Rezensenten bezeichnen, der vielen Hörern sicherlich schon aus den Ohren kommt.Vor allen Dingen muß man erkennen, daß der Appetizer "Of Foams And Waves", den man sich wie auch das Album legal downloaden durfte, zwar locker auf den Vorgänger gepasst hätte, aber nicht stellvertretend für den Sound "Tertia"s ist.Gut, es gelingt Caspian nicht, dem Genre neue Impulse zu setzen, aber das war auch nicht die Intention der beiden vorangegangenen Platten. Viel mehr verstehen es die US-Amerikaner auch hier, ein fließendes Album mit großartigen Melodien zu schaffen.Es wird auch nicht auf der Stelle getreten, denn gewachsen ist der Sound des Quintetts in jedem Fall. Man hört Weiterentwicklung, ohne daß sie sich aber vom bekannten Sound distanziert haben. Die Entwicklung von der "You Are The Conductor"-EP über den eben erwähnten Nachfolger bis hin zu "Tertia" ist hörbar, wenn auch kleinschrittig.Und so bietet das neueste Werk auch kleinere Nova.Der Opener "Mie" wartet mit Klavierklängen auf, das abschließende "Sycamore" setzt den furiosen Schlußpunkt mit einer steigernden Trommeleinlage. Auch "The Raven" klingt neu. Hier sorgt hintergründiger, sakral anmutendender synthetischer Sound für ein fast schon episches Ausmaß.Zudem setzen Caspian auf "Tertia" mehr auf atmosphärische Passagen, was zuweilen ans Debüt erinnert. Auch wenn Tracks wie "La Cerva" über kurz oder lang schon im Wall Of Sound versinken, wirkt alles etwas gereifter.Die ganz großen Explosionen, mit denen "The Four Trees" aufwartete bleiben größtenteils aus und man verzichtet auf einen Nackenbrecher wie es "Crawlspace" ist. Man gibt sich vordergründig eher zurückhaltend, wenn auch nicht wenig intensiv, indem man dem Hörer bei "Malacoda" phasenweise vermuten lässt, man hätte eine der neueren ISIS im Spieler, was zum Großteil am Intro und den heiseren Backgroundshouts liegt, die im übrigen von Will Benoit von den befreundeten Constants begesteuert werden.Nach mehrmaligem Hören lässt sich die Wucht der Platte aber erkennen, was mehr der Entwicklung der Tracks denn gezwungener Härte zu vedanken ist. Fast schon subtil entfalten sich die Titel mit zunehmenden Hören und führen nicht nur aufgrund der drei Gitarristen schließlich doch zu Kopfnicken und Mähneschütteln.All' die, die Caspian aufgrund ihrer eingängigen wunderschönen Melodien lieben, werden vor allem bei dem eben schon erwähnten "Sycamore" und "Concrescence" voll auf ihre Kosten kommen.Die fünf Jungs um Fronter Philip Jamieson haben es erneut geschafft, ein Album abzuliefern, an dem man eigentlich wenig bis nichts bemängeln kann. Wie bei "The Four Trees" ist Mehrfachhören aber Pflicht, um nicht auch standartisierte, vorschnelle Meinungen kundzutun.Genrefreunde dürfen hier gerne hineinhören und für die Fans der ersten beiden Platten dürfte es sich mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit um einen Pflichtkauf handeln... und eines sei noch verraten: auch das Glockenspiel taucht wieder auf.

Capolavoro del post-rock! Consigliato assolutamente per gli amanti del genere! Davvero un bel gruppo i Caspian.Consegna puntuale come al solito.

米マサチューセッツのポストロックバンドによる2ndアルバム。もはやこの手のジャンルには不感になってしまったと思っていたが、いやはや。これはもう、理屈では説明し難い次元で好きだ。路線としてはこれまでと何も変わらない、低沸点でバーストする轟音インストゥルメンタル。ながら、これまで以上にドラマティックに、ほとんど荘厳の域にまで達した巨大な音像がただただ素晴らしく、吹き荒れるエモーショナルな音渦に終始、没入。仄蒼い旋律が神秘的にも思える「世界」を紐解くオープナー"Mie"、その明滅を背後に地鳴りのような轟音が轟く"La Cerva"、吹き荒ぶ爆音とキリモミ状の高音が激突する"Ghosts Of The Garden City"へと続く序盤3曲で完全に魅了。感覚としては、EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKYの2ndを初めて聴いたときのような、このジャンルにしかあり得ない珠玉の昂揚感。誠実に打ち続けられるドラムを軸に、途轍もなく巨大な轟音が全方位を埋めていく。要所でダイナミックな蠢きを創り出すベースライン、随所で劇的な華やぎを生むストリングス、それらが渾然と螺旋を成して渦巻くサマが、前作を遙かに超えたヴィジョンをもって圧し掛かってくる。まるで眼の前で姿を変えていく巨大な渦巻きが視えるような"Malacoda"、柔らかに明滅するKeyがSAXON SHOREばりの優しい光を織り成すTr.5"Epochs In Dmaj"、そこから一気の飛翔により歓喜のシンフォニーへと飛び込んでいく"Of Foam And Wave"、さらには作中で最もクログロとしたヘヴィネスが打ち出される"The Raven"における巨大で透徹としたイマジネーションの奔流、脱け殻のような身体を美しいメランコリーの流れにただただ揺蕩たわせる"Viennna"、そしてラストトラック"Sycamore"で流れ出す余りに美しい旋律と轟音の波状と、全ての終わりの後に打ち続けられるドラムの力強い響き・・・情感豊かな旋律/巧みな轟音の重奏展開で魅せる、といった次元を超え、全体で一つの「世界観」を感じさせるに至った本作は、まさしく快作。現実には決して在り得ない世界を描きながら、しかしその像を通じてこの上なくリアルな感情を掻き立てられるような、まさしく音楽に触れる中での無上の喜びが味わえます。

Caspian, like Mogwai have always tried to separate themselves (sound wise)from other post rock bands and "Tertia" clearly shows that Caspain will keep doing just that;making different and buatiful albums that stand out. About half the album sounds like something Pelican would put out and, the other remaining songs just sound like the stuff that was on "The Four Trees". "The Four Trees" is well softer than "Tertia" and I belive Four Tees is there best work an exceptional album but,If you like Post-Metal, Metal, or anything heavy u'll love "Tertia". Great album, as I've heard Four Trees and Waking Season without noticing this work. I didn't realize it but until I opened it and listened to it while checking out the artwork that it's much darker than I thought Caspian could ever be. It was a bit of a disappointment being that I listen to them mostly for their relaxing meditative tracks. This however holds some tracks that sort of surprise you, if you already know Caspian. Although there are lots of incorporated grooves and a beautiful acoustic track. Ghosts of the Garden City has to be my favorite track.

I saw this band live as they opened for Underoath on their Rebirth Tour in Kansas City in April 2016 and I was so blown away. They had me truly mesmerized as I soaked in the guitars and melodies. This album is just one of all their albums that bring you to another world. Perfect music for any mood, whether you have had a good or bad day... Caspian is something indescribable. Buy this album.

Caspian is a solid band and once again have put out a great record. This is all instrumental, softer than the Four Trees, but still great in many ways. If you're into really melodic, deep instrumental stuff heavy with the digital delay, check this band out.
