There are 20 portraits of animals in this book of Querkles; they are hidden in puzzles made up of hundreds of overlapping circles, the segments of which have been numbered from 1–5. All you have to do is colour or shade the circles and segments, making 1s the darkest and 5s the lightest, to reveal your work of art. Review: Brilliant twist on the adult colouring books that are so popular at the moment! - I had never heard of Querkles before but I love adult colouring books so when I was offered this for review on desertcart Vine I put in my request immediately. I have to admit I was a little sceptical about a colour-by-numbers book, sure I loved paint-by-numbers pictures as a child but I was worried it would be far too boring for an adult to colour in. Rest assured this is in no way boring and I'm absolutely loving this colouring book so far! This book contains 20 different images to colour, all printed on a single sheet of A3 paper that is thick enough to colour with sharpie pens without damaging the next picture in the book. The pages are also perforated to make it easy to tear out the designs you're finished with in case you want to frame and display them. Each image is made up of hundreds of interconnected circles of all different sizes and they're all designed to be coloured in using five different colours or five shades of a single colour. Because of the way the images are created it's actually very difficult to tell before starting what animal you're actually going to be creating but there is a page showing black & grey thumbnails of each finished design at the back if you want to take a sneaky peak. Personally I prefer to be surprised as I start colouring. So before you get started you'll need to choose 5 colours for your image. They can be shades of the same colour or contrasting colours but you need to line them up from dark to light, 1 being the darkest and 5 being the lightest. I'd personally recommend using pens to colour the image since the area you'll be colouring is on the large side and pen also has the best chance of hiding the numbers once you're complete. I'm not going to lie you can still see the numbers even through my sharpies but from a slight distance they're not really noticeable and they don't detract from the finished image. I think the hardest part of this colouring book is actually selecting the colours you want to use but it's also a lot of fun. I'd recommend having some scrap paper on hand to try out different combinations before you start colouring the actual book, especially if you're planning on using bold or unusual colour combinations, so that you can get a better idea of what works and what doesn't. Half the fun of this book is going to be experimenting though so don't be afraid to take risks or try something new. I've attached a few pictures to this review: 1. Shows an uncoloured image to give you an idea of what the pages look like 2. A collage showing how the Giraffe picture slowly comes to life as you add each colour 3. A larger pic of the finished Giraffe 4. A collage showing the progress I made on the Camel (the second pic in the book) That should be enough to help you decide whether you want to buy this book or not (trust me you DO!) without giving you spoilers for most of the images in the book (there are 18 other designs I've not even coloured in yet!). Review: Had Me Checking the Mail Every Five Minutes in Anticipation... - These are the coolest colouring books of all time! I heard about them from a co-worker during a break one time, and then impulse bought it as soon as I got back to my desk. My roommates were laughing the day I was supposed to get it in the mail because I kept walking to the front door and checking it... I really wanted the colouring book... Very fun and easy to follow. Makes me feel artsy even though I super suck at all art-related things. If you're using something like gel pens to colour, I recommend doing cross-hatching so you don't use all your ink on one picture (using lines instead of colouring everything in). Also, didn't realise when I bought it, but this is a huge book! Like, size wise, it's ginormous. Super fun though. And love the colour by number/discover what you're colouring aspect.

Wonderfully creative color-by-numbers
I LOVE the Querkles books and was so excited to see two new ones finally come out! I recently moved and managed to get this one delivered on the first day in my new house. since I don't have TV or Internet, and limited supplies until my stuff is delivered, this coloring book has been a lifesaver! I use high quality artist brush pens (Faber-Castell Pitt brush pens) that my mom got me. I have limited colors, but it doesn't matter because each drawing only uses 5. I mix and match and play with tones to exercise my creativity, and enjoy the meditative process of filling in the circles. The paper is nice and heavy and the ink doesn't go through at all. The housing supervisor saw some of the pages spread out in my dining area and was super impressed! He immediately went out and ordered his own copy!

Not quite what I expected, but interesting
This "Querkles" book series was recommended to me by an artist friend who is far more skilled than I am at coloring. When I ordered it, I thought it was similar to the pointillism art style (many small dots/circles composing a larger picture) but it's actually not like that at all. My daughter and I colored several designs and we liked the way they came out, but I'm not sure if I am a complete fan of this method of coloring. The circles on these pictures overlap in such a way that often there are multiple colors within a circle---you won't be coloring lots of little round dots. The back page of the book shows how each page will come out, but I liked the idea of just coloring and being "surprised" as the big picture started to appear. The pages are perforated so you can easily remove them. There will be some circles left intentionally uncolored, as you can see on the cover of the book; I found that made the completed work look a little too unfinished for my taste. I think real artists would be able to make very pretty works of these animals, using better media and techniques than my daughter and me. An instruction page gives a few tips on coloring, but as absolute amateurs we went with plain colored pencils and just did our best. When we first opened the book, my daughter said "No way can we do these!" because it did look complex, but it wasn't as impossible as we feared.

Brilliant - and big
This is the original large format and miles better. The other is cheaper and significantly smaller. This one you can really see the numbers and the spaces are large enough to work with. The other one not so much. Thomas Pavitte is one clever chap. Wish he would do more.

What's Querkles? A bunch of fun!
Oh boy how much fun? What's could be more fun than a barrel of monkeys? A book of circles!!! The circles are numbered 1-5, well the ones you color, some are left blank. 1 being the darkest 5 being the lightest. I've been into the adult coloring book craze for years now and was looking for something different. Boy did I find it!!! It's like a puzzle within a picture that's a surprise! If you don't cheat and look in the back of the book. That said this is a larger book. It is taller than my others that I store in my coloring book basket. Each page can be removed for easy coloring or framing. It's fun to experiment with your choice of colors. So far I've worked with gel pens ( larger areas used up my pen) and sharpie fine tip markers (that bleed). I think I might try colored pencils next. I've had so much fun with these I'm ready to order again to do the pictures over. I do own the other Querkles books and wish there were more! Order this book and enjoy querkling!!!

Relaxing fun for the OCD mind....
This is SO fun. It's the perfect balance between, "Oh my GOSH I'm overwhelmed by all the colors and all the tiny spaces and where do I start and AAAHHHHH" and "Ahh, the soothing relaxation of coloring in a space without another care in the world." You get your chance to pick your own colors at the start, and then you just color in the lines. It's colorful and interesting to look at (otherwise I'd say just go for the connect the dots books) but takes the decision-making out of your typical coloring book experience. I love the fact that the numbers change in gradient - the darkest numbers being the ones associated with the sections that you color the darkest colors over - so they're easy both to cover up AND to tell apart at a quick glance. Fantastic find.

Merveilleux

Best colouring book!!
Best adult colouring book available on the market! It is simple enough for an older child to do but you can make it really challenging as an adult by trying different techniques like cross-hatching, paint or stippling.

and like them, this one is also of excellent quality
I've bought a few Querkles books before, and like them, this one is also of excellent quality. My 10 and 12 year old have also enjoyed doing Querkles, as they love seeing the picture unfold.
