Amazing game to play with family!
Ah, Super Mario Party – the game that turns your living room into a digital carnival of hilarity and high-fives! Join Mario and his pals for an adventure that's part board game, part chaos, and all-around fun! Imagine a virtual extravaganza where friends become foes and alliances are forged and shattered in the blink of an eye, all in the pursuit of glory and those precious, shiny stars! From the get-go, the game is like a carnival barker enticing you with promises of mini-games galore and laughs that could power a thousand Yoshis. The board game aspect? It's like Monopoly on a sugar rush, but instead of buying properties, you're navigating through cleverly designed boards, collecting coins, and plotting to outmaneuver your opponents with strategic dice rolls. And speaking of mini-games, they're the true gems of this party! It's like being thrown into a madcap game show hosted by Toad, where you'll find yourself flinging bananas in frenzied kart races, shaking the joy-cons like maracas in rhythm games, or frantically dodging incoming coconuts like a ninja in training. Each mini-game is a burst of joy, causing laughter-induced bellyaches and heated rivalries among friends faster than a green shell in Rainbow Road. The variety in game modes? It's like a buffet of gaming delights, offering something for everyone. Dive into classic Party Mode for some board game madness, flex your strategic muscles in Partner Party, or dive headfirst into the chaos of the mini-game gauntlet in Sound Stage. It's like a carnival with so many attractions, you won't know where to start! The humor and charm? They're as abundant as the coins you'll be collecting! The interactions between characters and the hilarious dialogues are like a stand-up comedy show featuring Mario and crew. You'll find yourself chuckling at the playful banter and quirks of each character, bringing an extra layer of joy to the game. Sure, the competition might make friendships strain faster than a rubber band in a tug-of-war, but isn't that the essence of a true Mario Party experience? The game isn't just about winning; it's about the shared moments, the laughter, the friendly (or not-so-friendly) rivalry that binds you and your pals together on this digital rollercoaster. In conclusion, Super Mario Party isn't just a game; it's a festival of joy, a gathering that turns ordinary get-togethers into legendary showdowns of fun and mayhem. So, grab your joy-cons, gather your friends, and let the party begin! It's an adventure that'll have you laughing, cheering, and high-fiving like a true Mario superstar!

Classic formula polished to perfection
Super Mario Party feels at old and new at the same time, and this is a great thing. The "who asked for this" mechanics of a shared car, dead-end board designs, and kitchen sink game modifications (like the rocket-car level from MP9) give way to a core "Mario Party Mode" that feels like the earliest (and best) entries in the series. But layered over that is a level of polish I didn't expect - a ridiculous "story" to tie everything together, cinematics to introduce and explain every board, a vibrant overworld like Splatoon or Nintendoland which feels so much better than a simple menu (but there's still a menu if you prefer!), and tons of extra modes that add variety. The game's new modes are cordoned off into discrete activities, so there's no confusion what you're getting into. The core Mario Party is front and center, but flanked by two new modes - River Survival and Sound Stage - with even more modes going outwards from there. The overall organization of the game is very good at not overwhelming you, despite having around 10 distinct experiences to play. Sound Stage was a pleasant surprise, and River Survival does the unexpected and makes everything cooperative. While these additions are nice, the core Mario Party mode is probably what buyers are getting this for. I think there are probably two main camps here. There are those who want to play a LOT of this game, master every minigame, and have tense competitive battles with friends or the AI - this is how I approached the first half of MP titles. Now, I'm firmly in a second camp, using Mario Party as a way to pass the time with friends of widely varying skill levels and investment. I'd say the game is for the latter crowd, but I haven't played enough to master it, so maybe I'll have to revise this statement. The RPG-like mechanic of building a team of "Allies" throughout a match gives you increases to every dice roll, and a larger pool of dice selections. Some dice have sides which move you 0 but give/take coins, others have different twists on the 1-6 dice - which is always available in addition to your player-specific die. The overall effect of allies is, matches which start slow quickly accelerate to genuine high-stakes strategy in the final few turns. The minigames are all well-made, but simplistic. Allowing the tutorial screen to function as an infinitely-looping playable version of the minigame is fantastic, so no one feels like they didn't understand the game before it started. Again, owing to differently skilled players, it seems Nintendo wants to make these games both easy to play and easy to master. Despite being over 5 hours into the game, I've rarely seen a repeated minigame, so I can't make any sweeping generalizations here, except that I've had a blast playing most of them. A covered-up game mode in the main plaza tells me it will open after I unlock all the minigames, so I'm excited to see what else is in store. The 4 boards I've seen so far (and from what I'm reading this may be the whole set) are all fun, and cater to different styles of play. Some require you to depend more on luck, others on long-term planning, and others careful dice management. However much I wish for more boards, I do realize there are 4 very different stages in Partner Party, one giant level with many branches in River Survival, an entire set of rhythm minigames for Sound Stage, and frankly they gave me more than my money's worth in content. So in summary, this is a Mario Party game that tries to return to its 20-year-old roots, but refreshed for the new generation. The multiple new game modes will keep things fresh and exciting for many sessions with your friends, but if those friends require a deeper sense of competition it may not fully satisfy, with easy to play minigames and a high luck factor. For Switch owners who liked the idea of sharing their console with someone anywhere, this is the best delivery of that promise since Mario Kart.

Finally - Mario Party returns to its roots!
I bought the latest iteration of Mario Party as I was getting together with a couple of long-time friends who spent a humiliating number of hours playing Mario Party in our younger years. It's been quite a while (i.e., the Gamecube era) since I've played a Mario Party game, but around that time the franchise started to take a bizarre turn. The usual formulation of "move around the board, win mini games, and buy stars" gradually seemed to fade away to away to less fun, more bizarre formats. I read no reviews about this version before buying it, and I was worried that this version would be no different. Alas... that's not the case! This seems like the first game of the franchise that keeps the original - and successful - formula of Mario Party while adding some fun features. The core gameplay itself is true to the core, but with some added features that actually make the game more interesting (e.g., the ability choose between different dice and recruit allies to use their dice). The mini games are as fun as always, though I will say the games generally seem to be fairly simplistic compared to games that I remember in the past. The mini game mode is fun and offers plenty of options if you enjoy that aspect of the game more than the typical board game format. I haven't played the online version so can't review that. Overall, if you're looking to get back to the original form of Mario Party greatness, this update will satisfy that itch. This is a classic game that is a true improvement on the franchise and returns to the best parts of Mario Party. If you're familiar with the franchise, you won't be disappointed with this version. If you've never played Mario Party, buy it, get some friends together, and have an outstanding time.

Awesome Game, disregard lower ratings. (Updated)
The game brings fun mini games, and some are the same as other mini games from older Mario parties. Others who wrote bad reviews are only complaining about using joy cons or needing to buy more controllers to do more than one player. I would reccomend disregarding those reviews for those people have probably never played a multiplayer game in their life. Very few bad things with the game but overall as fun as most traditional Mario Party games. (Updated): The only REAL issues with the game is the size of the boards. They are very short compared to past Mario games. Everyone giving 1 Star is just butthurt about not being able to use a pro controller on a gyro-movement game. If anything, it was smart for Nintendo to stick with joycons only, because not everyone uses a pro controller, and the use of different controllers would give unfair advantages or disadvantages to players in different mini games. Second, other reviews complain about not having a handheld mode (which there is if a friend brings an extra switch console). The problem with having a handheld mode for a PARTY game is that the switch has a small screen overall and it would make the game much more frustrating to play on a small screen. Yes, the game was meant to have single player capabilities but the game is seriously going to be no fun if you’re playing by yourself. It’s meant to be a game for fun and competition with friends. If you’re a loner and enjoy Nintendo games, I apologize, but this game was not made for you.

Best Mario Party in awhile
Super Mario Party is probably the best game in the series' recent history. With that being said, I still think that the older Gamecube and N64 games are better. This game returns to the game's classic formula and is a lot of fun to play with friends. The different modes are fun as well, though most of the time we just play standard Mario Party. This game has some problems though. There are some weird UI choices throughout the game. None of them make it 'bad', but it's weird that they're there and I wish they would patch them. For example, once you select a die, you can't go back to use an item. There are also only 4 boards in the game. While I think they are all decent boards, they are small and it would be nice to have more instead of some of the other modes. Additionally, while local multiplayer is great, the series continues to disappoint with its online multiplayer. You can only play 10 minigames online and it really isn't even worth playing even if you already have the online subscription. I think the biggest problem with this game is the lack of support it has received since launch. If they had added more boards, expanded the online modes, or fixed some of the weird UI, this would be a 5 star game. Instead, there have been no patches and no mention of any additional content, either free or paid. While this is a great game, wait for it to go on sale before buying it, as there simply isn't enough content to justify the full price.
