Antenna required for local channels. This receiver seems to be latest generation. The auto detect found 48 channels, where the old receiver found only about 20. The user interface is also greatly improved. If your projector has HDMI input then you are good to go.

The tuner has a built in recording feature so yes you can record local programs.
