A Little Too Advanced For Complete Beginners, but I Like It!
I would not recommend this for complete beginners to the Japanese language. Because of the way the cards are laid out, I think it would be better suited for people who have some knowledge of how to read Hiragana and how to properly pronounce Japanese syllables. Each flash card focuses on one Kanji character, but on most of the cards, the translation for that lone Kanji character is not given. Instead, 6 words that include the featured Kanji are presented on each card, along with Hiragana, Roumaji, and English translations for each word. You have to use context in order to figure out what the main Kanji character means, or go look it up online somewhere. Because of this, I think most beginners would be confused by these flash cards. I've been studying Japanese grammar and vocabulary for a couple of months and these cards work really well for me by building upon that foundation. The CD that comes with this kit is also not great for beginners. It contains 200 MP3 files - one for each of the 200 flash cards in the kit. In each MP3 file, a native Japanese speaker says the card number, followed by the Japanese pronunciation of each word on that card. No English translations are read. These audio files seem to be provided so you can learn how to properly pronounce the words. I do find that listening to the Japanese audio helps me memorize the vocabulary. The audio CD does not auto-play in my PC's CD-ROM drive. I have to open a media playing program and play the tracks from there. I don't know if this is just on my computer or if it's this way on all of them. Also, the CD does not work in traditional CD players. If you want to play this in a CD player, you'll have to burn the files to blank CD and format it to play in CD players. You could probably also copy the MP3 files to an mp3 player and listen to them that way, but I haven't tried it. If you're serious about memorizing a lot of useful Japanese words, this kit is great for that purpose, but be aware that you might need other tools as well, if you are a beginner.

Useful study cards
I was concerned that the flash cards may be difficult to read or not sturdy enough to carry with me in a jacket pocket. I was pleased with the small size of the cards yet with easily readable print, and with the strength of construction. I find the brief examples of use of the kanji printed on the cards helpful and instructive. The clever mnemonic pictures are occasionally useful as well. Overall, I'm very happy with this product. I intend to buy the second set, and would recommend these cards to an intermediate student of Japanese who has a working knowledge of hiragana and katakana.

Good cards, small binder ring.
Love these cards! Kanji on the front and detailed explanations on the back. Be warned however that the binder ring they give you is a little small. All 200 cards WILL fit, but they are pretty cramped.

Great study tool
I love these flash cards for studying kanji! The ring makes them very convenient to study in rapid succession. It is a great addition to your Japanese learning tool box.

Incomplete card set
This set of cards is incomplete and does not fully complement the Tuttle Essential Japanese Kanji Vol.1. 131 characters covered through chapter 10 and the book covers 250 characters. There are no cards for chapter 10 and there are many missing from previous chapters. I will have to buy the second set covering 201-400 cards to complete the book (I hope it does). Tuttle should have designed and organized the set of cards to follow the book by each chapter, but for the most part they were mixed up. Good information on the cards and I generally like Tuttle products, but a little more thought needs to go into this.

Great for beginners!
I'm a total newbie to the Japanese language but so far these have made my first 30 kanji very easy to learn and memorize! If I have any complaints it's that I wish the cards were a little sturdier, they are starting to tear where the metal ring holds them.

Handy revision time
This is for a gift, so I can't comment so much on the teaching qualities of this kit. I picked this because I know the publisher, I read great reviews and I think handy cards are a great tool for learning and revising, so I was sure it was good quality in all sense. I see that this Kanji flash cards kit is really well made: presentation, printing, content... I think it's helpful and a lovely gift for Japanese language learners.

Great addition to any Japanese learning toolkit
The sample phases and expressions on the back of the cards help build up vocabulary - something smartphone-based flashcards apps won't do. I've owned a number of language learning materials from Tuttle over the years and this is the same great quality.

Great tool for learning kanji!
Great product, very informative flash cards that also show different combinations with pictured kanji. I've yet to listen to the audio files, but will do so soon.
