The dry sprinkle method has the impression of making it look like moss is already growing which I liked, but I noticed local birds can really toss it around in their search for insects in the dirt. NOTE, I had to spend a lot of time crushing the hard rocks of powdered buttermilk so it would spread more with the moss and not just hit the ground and sit there. The spots where I spread the wet mixture look like some sort of alien vomited goop all over :) but fortunately the birds don't bother it. I know patience is key and I'm hopeful it may work out. It's only been down for a week so far. I watered it lightly 3 times the first couple days and then backed off so the ground wouldn't get water logged. Then I've been working with mother nature to keep it moist but not soaked. As long as the ground and moss feels moist it seems good and I've only watered when things start to look and feel dry. In the 2nd week I've watered about twice on sunny days, and once on cloudy days.UPDATE: All the millions of little seedlings that have sprouted are most likely from seeds that fell from trees over the years but were dormant until all the constant waterings lately as a result of watering the moss milkshake. That said, the moss doesn't appear to have changed much in the 2 weeks since, but I've noticed more and more earthworms on top of the soil seemingly dead or close to dead. It think they may have been ingesting the moisture retention gel. :( In the areas I spread the wet mixture, I can't see the moss so much anymore - it seems to have been absorbed by the retention gel which has swollen quite a lot and still looks like alien vomit.UPDATE 10/10/14: So a year later and no, there is no moss growing where I spread the moss milkshake. I would say either watering daily was not enough, or this stuff just doesn't work that well. I can't even tell where I spread the stuff anymore. But as a result of trying hundreds of plugs of perennial ground covers like miniature brass buttons and white star creeper, the area has been well watered very regularly and I do see some natural moss growing in some areas. I know it's not the moss from the milkshake because it's a completely different type of moss. So I would say in retrospect to just water the area heavily and if moss wants to grow there, it will grow eventually - but probably not worth to spend the money, time and effort on the milkshake method unless money and time are not a problem for you. The amount of watering necessary though is not a friend if you have weeds - it took me all summer to reduce the chickweed to the point where I didn't have to weed every square inch three times a week... :) ### ⭐ Buy just the spores or make your own mix following online instructions but skip buying this. *by D***A on July 16, 2014* I was looking to grow a moss layer in a medium sized terrarium I had set up, this looked promising. I followed the instructions on the package and made the entire box in order to be sure of properly mixing all materials. I spread some of the paste in the terrarium, some outside around the base of a tree, and the rest under some plants I keep in pot on the porch. The instructions say it takes a year to have any growth (something you don't find out until you open the package) so my complaints about the moss not experiencing any growth could technically be unfounded. I have been tending the plants for about a month and it still looks like a brown pile of sludge. None of the areas have any growth so variations in sunlight and water have had no effect. And to top things off the mixture I placed outside began to attract bugs and other animals. The mixture contains buttermilk powder so my dogs kept trying to lick it off of the tree. The packaging does not say whether the gel is non-toxic but my dogs didn't seem to have any adverse reaction. ### ⭐ Do not buy this; it's easier, quicker and less aggravating to just put your money through a shredder. *by R***D on September 26, 2014* Sadly, since I took the time to try and get this stuff to work numerous times over different growing seasons, I cannot get a refund. Not matter how carefully I planted this, or where or when I planted it, nothing grew at all. At 25 bucks, this was an expensive and time consuming waste. I hope the company will stand by this product and offer me a refund or a replacement of some moss that will actually grow. I would be happy to mention that in this review if that happens. Barring that, please consider this a zero star rating, and do NOT even consider purchasing this product.
