They are on my top five list of all-time favorite bands. I think Machine Head is arguably the second best album ever, only after Abbey Road.. But the stuff on these four discs is absolutely horrid. It was so irritating that I could barely make it through. I forced myself to listen to it a second time, and it almost made me nauseous. I’m not sure which vocalist it was, but one of these guys has the worst voice I’ve ever heard in rock ‘n’ roll.. And there’s just all kinds of really irritating outtakes that sound like pure garbage. I would think Deep Purple‘s management should’ve caught all this detritus and closed it down from ever being released. The worst teenage garage bands sounds better than this. In my opinion it’s very disrespectful to this band to release stuff that shows it at its absolute worst.

Half of this is Unlistenable
The mk1 era of Deep Purple covered on the first disc is great. The early recordings with Ian Gillian are quite good, but I seriously doubt that they were recorded in 1969, since Gillian didn’t join the band until 1970, to my understanding. My complaint about this collection, however, is the horrible sound quality of disc 3. I couldn’t even listen to more than a few minutes of it. It’s a shame because disc 3 and 4 have some fantastic songs which I would love to hear live with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals.
