First of all, like the other Arcs products on Amazon, these are currently marked way up. Please do not spend $10+ over list price for this. Find a better source. If the price settles down to what it should be, disregard this warning. On to the Leaders & Lore expansion. This is a small add-on for the base Arcs board game, a phenomenal game with lots of variability and intricate gameplay. To be clear, the base game comes with some Leader cards, and some Lore cards. These are optional ways to add a bit of asymmetry to the gameplay. Think of them as giving you unique feats or perks - but usually also a handicap somewhere. Personally, I think you could stick with the cards included in the base game for quite some time, but this add-on includes more options for more variety. I had no issue with spending the small price (again, caveat emptor) on a game I know I'll replay many times.

As the title says: it's not required to enjoy Arcs at max but it's surely an enjoyable expansion to ad possibilities to the asymmetrical game mode.
