can you use a rain bird solenoid in place of a hunter solenoid ?

No you can't. This solenoid fits Hunter valves ONLY, and doesn’t fit on any other valve. Also, although Rainbird does make several different solenoids, they too are specific to Rainbird valves. With regard to Rainbird there are a few exceptions with their DC TBOS product, but by in large Rainbird is for Rainbird Hunter is for Hunter.

When doing maintenance on the system what do you use to identify the signal if the valve box location is unknown?

You would need a wire tracking device to start at the controller and trace the hot wire for that valve. These devices cost more than $950.00 for a low end one.

The solenoid im replacing only has 2 red wires , looks like this one has 4. Do you just pair the extra wires?

This solenoid has only 2 red wires, very easy to install.

Is this a direct replacement for part # 5979482 Solenoid Valve?

This solenoid will work on any Hunter valve and will work with any AC powered irrigation controller. It will not work with battery powered controllers, however. The number 5979482 is the Patent Number off the side of this item.

Bought this as a replacement for what I assumed was a tired Hunter AC-Solenoid for one of my sprinkler zones. Replaced it easily. After much troubleshooting, I determined that some rodent under my deck had eaten all of the insulation off of my sprinkler wire harness during the winter. In doing so, it had also eaten through the copper wire of this zone. Patched the wiring - and all is working properly. I now have a spare Hunter AC-Solenoid for when ever one fails in the future.
