It is solid and does not come off on buffing wheel for drill** A: Buffing compounds are a wax base with a fine cutting abrasive mixed in. You only want a tiny bit on the wheel at a time. You won't hardly be able to tell that it is coming off if you do it right. Medium pressure and only hold the compound on the wheel for a couple of seconds. Work down in grits, starting with a courser grit first and followed by a finer grit. **Q: Is this product supposed to be rock hard? Just received and they are very hard. Need them to polish titanium, stainless steel and silver rings.** A: For hand polishing I bought an all steel can of almonds at Walmart. Broke up some of the bar and added some mineral oil to the can. Heated on a stove until it melted. You may have to add a bit more oil. It stays soft and the almond lid keeps it from getting hard. If it does get hard just add a little mineral oil and stir until it gets soft again. **Q: Can you be used to make semi chrome finish on aluminum that was painted over?** A: With 6 different grits in package with a bench buffer and good buffer wheels don’t see why not. FYI I bought my inexpensive buffer from Harbor Freight and assortment of 3 or 4 buffer wheels from Amazon. Good luck with your project!!! **Q: do you change wheels when you change grit? or do you just put he latest grit on top of the old grit?** A: I would use a separate wheel for each grit because you wouldn't want to use a fine grit over an aggressive grit as that would defeat the purpose of the fine grit reaching a shiny polish. Only downside is the wax binder they use just does not clean off easily. I've recently polished parts for anodizing, and getting all potential contamination off *compound* is one of the most important things. I've tried boiling water, soapy water, boiling soapy water, industrial degreasers, ultrasonic cleaner, ultrasonic toothbrush and still cannot get it completely out of the inside of pieces, especially threaded holes. I wish they binder they used was more water soluble, because even hopping in the shower covered in black compound, and it still doesn't want to completely come off. Great product as far as grit goes though.
