Onvis Smart Motion Sensor, Wireless Hygrometer, Thermometer, Works with Apple HomeKit, Smart Home Automation, PIR Motion Detector-Thread (iOS 17.4 and Above is Required)

We have smart switches and lights in our kitchen so we have been looking for a smaller battery powered Matter or HomeKit motion sensor. We wanted some of the lights to turn on and off automatically when you enter or leave the room. I setup the motion detector on a shelf about 20 feet from the entrance to the kitchen and near another hallway that someone might walk in from in the dark. I angled the motion detector so it’s seeing activity also in the kitchen to trigger motion. Works perfectly with the automation I setup to turn on the under-counter lights if anyone enters the kitchen between sunset/sunrise and if the overhead can lights were turned off. I needed to use the convert to shortcut feature to achieve this when creating the automation. Another thing I appreciate about this other than how fast it triggers the lights to turn on/off and its motion detection distance is that it is built on thread so that it isn’t connecting as another device to Wi-Fi but instead connecting through the Apple TV or HomePod Mini we have. Nice that it includes a temperature sensor and humidity sensor which were almost exactly the same readings as my smart thermostat. The Onvis app definitely needs an interface overhaul to update it to iOS design language but it functions well. Really easy to adjust settings within the Onvis app such as the interval that it is checking for motion, motion sensitivity or even if you want it to only detect motion in the light/dark or always. I did run into an issue with Apple Home when setting up an automation saying if the motion detector turns on versus detects motion but I just force quit Onvis and the Apple Home app and restarted creating the automation then it populated the detects motion trigger.

I’m very impressed with these monitor sensors I bought one of the black outdoor ones for my mailbox and it works wonderfully! It’s accurate very little false alarms. It’s especially great to detect automobiles coming into the driveway. It’s about 55 feet away from the nearest hub and doesn’t not have connectivity issues. I also bought the white ones to keep tabs around my exterior doors. They work just as good! I have them under a soffit or something covering it. I know it says for indoor but I’m giving a shot outdoors. I love how easy it is to connect to Apple home! It’s through Matter so setup was a breeze!

UPDATE: 26-June-2024: I replaced the SMS2 that was misfiring (false motion detection) with a new one and now it is working great. The new unit has not triggered a single false motion event. It seems that maybe the first SMS2 I received was a lemon? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The SMS2 is very close to being a good product. But as of this writing (June 18 2024), it has some warts. First, the Onvis app is terrible but that can be overlooked since most interaction with the SMS2 is done via the iOS Home app. The second wart is much more problematic - Like others have reported, I have found that the SMS2 will consistently generate false motion triggers. I have the SMS2 located in a bedroom and the SMS2 is configured to have all of its motion and dark/bright sensitivity settings at the "low" setting. The bedroom is empty during daytime hours, but the SMS2 will sometimes trigger motion detection when there is no motion in the room. Hopefully, this is a software and/or firmware issue that can be resolved with future updates? Fingers crossed. But for now, the SMS2 is not reliable for accurate motion detection.

Super easy to pair up with Apple Homekit, as well as the Onvis app. I bought this to measure temp and humidity in my basement, so I'm not using the motion sensor presently. The only thing I don't like is that Homekit will not allow me to set a notification to my iphone if the humidity reaches a certain level....I think this is an issue with Homekit rather than the device, as I have the same issue with a door contact sensor from another brand.

If you’re using Apple Home Kit. You have to pair the device, and then unplug the device you’re using as a hub to reset the connection. Once I did that, the device worked smoothly.
