Mastering ArchiMate Edition III: A serious introduction to the ArchiMate(R) enterprise architecture modeling language

As a technical architect working within small to medium sized companies, I'd been looking for a better, unambiguous way to describe the various architectures I work with. When I initially discovered the Archimate modelling language, I was looking for resource that could explain not only the syntax but how to use it effectively and practically. Having bought Mastering Archimate, I've found this book indispensable. The author explains the syntax effectively in the first part; but what I've found most valuable are the patterns which he has created, I can now effectively take these and use them as sort of "templates component" to apply them to my architectures (for example, from modelling database nodes to modelling excel applications). The advanced topics are also very helpful, and I've found that I've been able to pick and choose which particular topics within the advanced subjects I'd like to use to help speed up applying the language to my specific situations. In addition, the author has been exceptional at responding to questions that I've sent. All in all, I've found the book to be well written and very thorough, and almost every architectural scenario/situation where I'd like to apply the language has been covered. I expect that this book is not only great for beginners in Archimate, but will also serve as an excellent reference for more experienced modellers.

Whilst I'm not new to architecture or Enterprise Architecture I am new to Archimate and this book has been a fantastic primer on the subject. I've been using this for the last week on a complex project and found it extremely helpful!

This book is great for learning Archimate notation. It does not stop at teaching the notation like other UML books. It has numerous architecture diagrams taken from real world scenarios. It also shows alternative architectures of systems and the pros and cons; and when to use which. Many of the concepts that were a bit 'blurry' to me and some of my doubts were cleared after reading this. I was having trouble deciding what is the best way to design/draw solutions for certain scenarios where more than one way was possible. This book helped me to get clarity on those issues. Thank you very much for writing this bok.

A really clear handbook that describes both the notation but gives examples of how it can be applied to real life situations. My organisation has just moved to using ArchiMate and almost all of my colleagues have looked at the book, skimmed its contents and then asked where I got it.

THE reference to ArchiMate with useful information and an ongoing ability to inform and guide. If you're in the enterprise or solution architecture space this should be mandatory reading and is must to begin modelling the domain with the clarity it deserves.

I feel as though I should ask for the last three days of my life back! Based upon the other reviews, I bought this book thinking it was going to be a well described and exampled book that would build upon other ArchiMate books I have read. What I discovered was an in depth description of the specification with no real world examples and yet the author boasts that this is by far the best book! I'm sorry but I have certainly read much better and what is worse is that the book goes on and on when actually, take away the ego text, it would be relatively small. Would I buy it - no. This is now going to gather dust on a large bookshelf of architect books.

This is the only book I could find that decently explains how to use ArchiMate in practice.

Probability the best book for learning Archimate

I've first learned about ArchiMate during a TOGAF training several years back. The break out session was rather short and we couldn't make too much ground. I later tried it myself, however the examples I found were not always conclusive and so I gave up again. Recently I came across the book from Gerben. At a first glance the price seemed rather high. I finally decided to buy the book. It provides you with an open an honest walk through the ArchiMate language. Most valuable I found all the examples from reality as well as the step by step development of patterns helping to deal with standard situations in the life of an enterprise architect. For me the book was worth it's price. Maybe the author could consider to give away the PDF version for those having bought the book for there reference.

This book is a masterpiece. It introduces the reader in the concepts of today’s most powerful enterprise ADL and illustrates these with very useful real-life examples. On top of modeling, it indirectly also educates on design principles. For me as an enterprise security architect, the support for risk and control as motivation extensions was particularly useful. Already version I of the book boosted my productivity; Version II adds several advanced concepts, distinguishing primary, secondary and tertiary architectures. The best bang for the buck in EA!

The first few chapters look like boring, but then you start to understand the reasons of having those chapters. The book is really nice with tons of examples and styles. Before reading the book I was looking for online trainings, I even read the Archimate Language Specification and they are not very helpful. But this book helped me to answer various questions about how to model my specific cases. There is a free version of the first couple of chapters published by the author. After reading that version I decided to purchase the book. I strongly recommend this to whoever wants to learn enterprise architecture modelling.
