Our information states it is made of sturdy wood construction.

What size are the balls? What are recommended replacement balls?

I haven't measured the balls but the hole openings are 1.75 inches across. I put all kinds of things in there for the cats. All their toy mice fit, lots of different balls. Their favourites also include Petmate Loony-Loops, Cancor 1.5" Mini Mylar & Plush Fluff Crinkle Ball, Ethical Atomic Bouncing Ball Cat Toy, Ethical Pet Wide Durable Heavy Gauge Plastic Colorful Springs Cat Toy, Colorful Intertwined Rubber Balls - Pack of 12, and Ethical 1-1/2-Inch Mylar Balls Cat Toys to name a few. Possibilities are endless. I don't know what I would do without this toy. I change the toys inside every 3-4 days to keep their interest so they don't get bored with the same old things.

I have a very large (24 lbs, healthy weight 23) polydactyl cat (extra toes up front, looks like bit mittens for paws). Are the holes big enough?

Yes, the holes are pretty big, maybe 1 1/2 to 2" wide. I think that it will not be a problem for your polydactyl cat.

How big are the holes?

The holes are 2" big and is not recommended for kittens since there is a possibility of them getting their heads caught in the holes.
