Oxford Grammar of Classical Greek

I am writing this review whilst buying my second copy of the book. Not because the first copy is too dilapidated for further use but only because I would hate to think the book might go out of print and I might then lose my current print. This book is my constant companion as it is so portable. It bears all the merits that the other reviewers have praised and in addition an advantage which none has mentioned. The book is packed with quotations from the classic authors with English translations, illustrative of the grammatical points that are being made. This advantage renders the work a fascinating resource unlike any other tutors most of which are basically school books not intended to be "cribbed". If you want to read classic Greek (and begin quoting from the classics!)then make this your next purchase. I heartily recommend it.

When I give up on my textbook and workbook, I turn to this handy volume that manages to explain complicated things simply. A good vademecum if you are studying Ancient Greek.

Very affordable and useful reference tool for Greek students

Who really likes to learn about grammar? Especially complicated Classical Greek grammar. But this book is succinct with its explanations and incredibly useful for my pgcert. A must-buy for any budding classicists.

An excellent feature in this grammar is the use of macrons to distinguish ᾱ, ῡ and ῑ. As much of Classical Greek is in the form of poetry, it is necessary to be able to identify the long vowels to scan the metre. It is not meant to be a definitive work; for this you will have to resort to Smyth or Goodwin; but as a lightweight primer covering the basic essentials it is good value for money.

A great supplement alongside the textbook for my Ancient Greek students. Attractively and sturdily bound. Clearly written. Sometimes explains things more succinctly than textbooks. Good charts for reference. Affordable!

値段の割に情報量が多く、例文も豊富です。 しかし、その例文は全て古典作品からの引用なので、 この本から学習を開始するような初心者が読んで理解するのは、 まず不可能かと思われます。 例えば10ページから始まる基礎の基礎である品詞(Case)の説明では、 13ページの例文で「διεφθαρμενον」という語がでてきます。 基礎の基礎を学んでいる段階の人が、 「これはφθειρ-ωの変化した完了形の分詞で、そのstemは"φθαρ"で、 partのMasのmidのAccuの形だ」 と分かるか疑問です。 ρ-σαがραに省略されたアオリストの「φθειρ-α-μεν-ος」の形と極めてややこしいです。 本書では、例文の単語について、そうした説明は一切なく、下に英訳があるだけです。 しかし、どうしてそういう訳になるのかは、上に示したような文法を辿る知識が必須です。 従って、一通り基礎の文法を学んで練習を積まないとまず理解できません。 もしくは、表面的に分かったつもりになるだけです。 少なくとも「動詞の分詞化とその活用」をまだ理解していないレベルの人向けの本ではないです。 幸い、基礎の基礎はインターネットの英語サイトに非常に良いものがあるので、 入門者はまずその内容を叩き込んである程度練習してから、 この本に取り掛かると良いと思います。

El libro llegó en perfecto estado. Respecto al contenido, es sumamente útil para quien se encuentra estudiando esta lengua tan antigua y tan moderna a la vez. El precio no me pareció elevado si se toma en cuenta el contenido.

I found the Grammar of Classical Greek to be very informative as it has continuously shown itself to strengthen both my lexicon and understanding of both ancient and modern Greek, both to which it heavily applies. In fact, it has also shown me how little modern Greek has changed in comparison to Classical Greek. With this in light, I was thoroughly unconvinced by its argument on the pronunciation of the alphabet and the words herein, which have been firmly preserved by the Greek Orthodox Church since St. Ignatius in the mid-1st century, which continues to use Classical Greek as the language for its liturgical services, unaffected by the slight changes in the vulgar which consequently resulted in the Greek spoken today. Overlooking this shortcoming, the book gave a fantastic insight into the grammar and proper conjugations, even for the irregular verbs and nouns. This tool will be useful to me even after the book starts falling apart from age and use. I would even suggest searching for a hardcover copy of the book...

This is a great resource for learning Ancient Greek! It covers all the basics in a clear and concise manner. For the price, it's great!
