It took four years for The Lumineers to follow up their platinum-plus, multi-Grammy-nominated, self-titled debut. Cleopatra proves Schultz and Fraites - along with cellist/vocalist Neyla Pekarek- are neither taking their good fortune for granted, nor sitting back on their laurels. With the help of producer Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Avett Brothers), the man Wesley calls "our shaman," the band ensconced themselves in Clubhouse, a recording studio high atop a hill in rural Rhinebeck, N.Y., not far from Woodstock. The Lumineers then set about trying to make musical sense of their three-year-plus roller coaster ride. Their skill at setting a visual story to music comes through amidst the delicate, deceptively simple acoustic soundscapes. This time, though, bassist Byron Isaac provides a firm, low-end on the apocalyptic opener "Sleep on the Floor," a ghostly tune about getting out of town before the "subways flood [and] the bridges break." It's a densely packed, cinematic song that echoes Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City" and John Steinbeck's East of Eden. Cleopatra also deals with what Wesley terms "the elephant in the room," the band's success and the way it can sometimes put a target on your back. The syncopated piano rolls in "Ophelia" , the organic sound of fingers squeaking on guitar strings in "Angela" and the Faustian bargain described in "My Eyes" consider the perils of getting what you wish for, with everyone knowing your name, and your songs. The band had total artistic freedom in writing and recording the album, so Wesley and Jer pushed the envelope. "We continue to make the kind of records we want to," says Wesley. "We believe in this music. It's a true labor of love. We just want to keep reaching more people with our songs." Given the evidence on The Lumineers' sophomore album Cleopatra, that shouldn't be a problem. Review: Great tracks - Love this album. Review: Amazing Album! - Amazing album! ... The Lumineers just get better with each song. Not had this out of my stereo since it arrived. Each song a hit in my opinion, beautifully written-poetic lyrics that hit deep (at first I thought it may have just been the wine - candles lit -headphones in - curtains drawn etc) but still has that effect on me no matter what time of day I listen :) I couldn't single out a particular song to call my favourite, as each individual song as it's own merit. This album easily puts current 'chart music' to shame, I personally don't believe they get enough credit. But then I think that is one of the appeals, they don't just knock out a song in hope of it entering the top 10. They write lyrics & create music to feed their soul & not because they need 'a hit.' Highly recommend. Stunning album.

Brilliant album
Brilliant album worth every penny. Well written songs fantastically sung. Music being a very personal thing my review is obviously subjective as I am unable to get the same opinion of someone who doesn't like music. Assuming you haven't heard of the band they are an American group who are able to reach out musically to all ages. We saw them in Manchester after buying the first album, which when I bought it had only heard one song, they were absolutely awesome live, the second album Cleopatra is a masterpiece. If you take a leap of faith in buying this album, you have invested heavily in your musical pleasure, I am certainly very pleased with my Cleopatra album.

Difficult 2nd album? No, brilliant 2nd album
Every track is a discernible, hummable tune ... lots of ho's and hey's ... which is sort of their trademark ... accoustic brilliance with thumping drums creates a really happy vibe ... even though some of the lyrics may be downbeat the overall feel is upbeat ... a bit contradictory ... but that's the brilliance of the writing ... which gives a second layer to this album ... once you've fallen for the tunes you then fall for the lyrics ... best album of 2016 ... just back from watching them at Latitide Festival on a sunny Sunday afternoon ... class.

I really love this
Saw the Lumineers at Hyde Park at the last UK Tom Petty concert before he sadly died. They were original, quickly but with great tunes and lyrics. The audience loved them as they were soon singing along with the catchy melodies. Had already got their first album to get to know some of the songs before the concert but as soon as I got home ordered cleopatra as well. Some modern music with some life and origality. Definitely a 'grower' as a lot of the best music is.

Fantastic.
One of the best albums I’ve purchased in a long time, I’m definitely impressed. This album flows beautifully and I love following the ‘story’. There are one or two tracks that weren’t instantly likeable but eventually grow on you and I look forward to getting this on vinyl at some point. Didn’t much care for the overplayed ‘Ho Hey’ off their previous album but this is a gem of an album that makes me consider going back and giving the rest of their albums a second glance.

It's wonderful! I've always liked The Lumineers
I've been listening to this all evening with my jaw on the floor and my heart in the sky. It's wonderful! I've always liked The Lumineers, but confess I slid their CDs a little lower down the to-play stack than Paulo Nutini, Tom McRae, Mumford and Sons et al who I thought pitched a mood better. No more. This is sublime songwriting and utterly straight-in-the-vein listening. Just brilliant.

We first bought the CD right when it was released. It was just after getting our brand new jeep with some decent weather. We were just spending the day in the nice weather out in our front yard when amazon delivered the package. I had recently taken the doors and roof off of the jeep, and decided to use it as [really expensive] boombox. The first few tracks [to me] are amazing songs, and I was waiting for some kind of decline as the tracks played on, but one after the next - great music continued throughout the rest of the album. This was the first CD I had purchased in over 10 years, but I did it just to support The Lumineers, but when we started listening to it, the benefit was all ours. With a brand new Jeep, and many summer adventures on [and some off] the road, this album became an audio cue that reminds our kids of so many amazing memories doing things as a family. Later that year, my wife wanted [and got] a record player for her birthday - which is also christmas. A couple of months later, I thought that it would be cool to also have this album on vinyl - and ordered it. To my surprise - it is a "deluxe" edition - with a few more amazing songs! All we need now is for The Lumineers to release their next album, afterall, we have more adventures to go on... and could use another soundtrack.
