Gotta Love this product: After hours of research, I finally settled on this company, this technology, and at this price, and here's why: First, "It works as advertised": The 3,000 V is more than adequate to kill any tiny bugs, which might be small enough to escape between the grids. (I failed to test it on that other larger pests that were bugging me, that weighed in at 150 LBS. But I suspect it might be harmful! to them.) My tests in the past few weeks were mainly for fruit flies, which were more bothersome than you'd think. Buy and ripen bananas often, and you'll generally get a science project, eventually. Don't thoroughly grind up the peels, and in a few days or so, you could collect enough to start a genetics breeding experiment to use for a school project. The 1/2" deep tray is likely enough for roughly 1,000,000 fruit fly corpses. Bulbs and running costs of ownership: I don't intend on buying another one for many years, unless I find the need for two. I don't want to worry about changing out bulbs that will burn out. So, the 10 year lifespan, even if I leave it on 24 x 7 most of the time, became a requirement. Also, since the other models are burning out LEDs that should last virtually forever, tells me that the reason must be heat. That much heat, mans I'm paying for the hour/day to both heat the air, and then paying once again (25%) to cool it. Do the math as their website suggests, and that boosts the costs of their competitors considerably, not counting the costs of constantly replacing the bulbs every month or so. UV bulbs, and why ONLY this model works the best: I didn't intend on using any tube type UV lighted zappers. I bought one years ago, and regretted when it lasted less than a year, and even then a replacement bulb was going to cost +$18. I tossed it out at a $60 loss. These bulbs are unique, in that they not only use much less electricity, run cool, last nearly forever, (OK, still, +10 years), but they are bright and have two colors, instead of just one. Since I threw out most of my posters and dayglo shirts from the 1970's, I can't vouch for the appeal of the different colored UV lights to attract more of our uninvited house guests (that I'm trying to kill). But, appealing to their finer tastes with two colors can't hurt (us). Buying a "waterproof" zapper? Really? This product is not waterproof, but then if you plan on putting a 3,000-7,000 volt appliance of any kind in the rain, I don't care if it is waterproof or not, you should find a way to keep water away, and don't touch anything, until and unless you unplug the power plug if it gets wet. Apparent brightness and noise level: Anyone that says this is "dim", "IS DIM"!! In fact, it is very bright. Do the math and it is apparent that THREE ~ 10" bulbs can be brighter than one vertical bulb. Also, BOTH sides are equally shining, front and back. We first used this while sleeping, and it is not conducive to sleep. First, it is very very bright in a dark room. Second, zapping any bug is very noisy even from 30 feet away. Growing up with B-52's taking off and landing from 1,500 feet above taught me that the noise can be ignored, eventually. OTOH, sleeping with bugs that are bugging you might lead you to enjoy the satisfaction that comes from hearing yet another irritant biting the dust, I know I did. The lights likely do work better at night, but I can also ensure you that it also works to attract bugs in a fully lighted kitchen. At night, you can have lost of fun discovering which kitchen items and clothing are highly or slightly fluorescent. Metal chain -- Caution, or replace with "plastic wire": IT does come with a metal chain. Be very careful or don't use it, if you think you are going to turn it on the side, since the chain could enter the first grid, and connect with the +3.000 volt grid. I can't opine of the safety, or lack thereof, for the relative safety of the power supply. But, I do know that from personal experience replacing magnetrons in microwave ovens, those 4-5,000 volt power suppiies kill many unsuspecting amatuer DIY folks., since they are also high power (amps). Also, microwave ovens keep their charge after unplugged. So, if you open ANY of these bug zappers, be aware that there can be high power components, depending on who designed them. Ensure you ground ANY high voltage power supply, before working on the insides. (Microwaves can still be deadly though, while trying to ground them.) Power Switch: But don't rely on it for working on the insides: This model does have a power switch on the front, so unlike most other models, you can turn it off and still leave it plugged in. (Still do NOT use this switch as the "safe way" to replace bulbs, open the cover, or "sweep the power grid" with the brush supplied.) The power plug is "polarized", which shows that the design is that one (larger) side is "hot". YMMV though, depending on who wired your house, or whose extension cord you are using. With improper house wiring, it is possible that this metal chassis (or ANY appliance like this) has a "hot" chassis, even when "turned off". Ripeness Alarm! (New Feature Discovered) I've you've ever come back from the store, put everything away, and then four days later, this thing starts "singing", with the more frequent percussion of bug death, you might have a problem. See that paper bag you left on the counter?? It has RIPE fruit inside. Along for the ride, was your new fruit fly science project. This alerts you that you likely should seek out that bag, before that fruit is any riper. Fraud Detector! (Yeah, yet another feature I discovered!) Ever have your friends over for poker night, only to find that you supposed "friends" want to stiff you, even though you won and do expect to be paid? Only tonight when writing that check of passing those $20 or $100 bills, you later find that they were FAKE?? Yup. It happens, and when it does, do so when you are using this to light the table so you can easily tell if those bills are real or fake. The security stripe on the side is clearly readable, and some foreign currency will shine even brighter. Those "safety checks" only say "void" to prevent you from copying and using that check every week. Ok, so what do I do when someone is passing me a fake?? Simply take the handy chain, and ask them to carefully drop one end through the grate. Best also to order more garbage bags now, so you can remove the fraudster over time. Finally, I DO highly recommend this, obviously. My plan is to leave this plugged in 24 x 7, since Florida most always has new "surprise guests" arriving at all times of the day or night.

I purchased 2 units of a different brand (AspecteK). They worked so well that I wanted 2 more, so I went shopping and found this model from BuzBug, which was LED (the other was Fluorescent bulb) and boasted a higher voltage. I figured this model sounded even better than the other brand that I was already happy with so I gave it a shot and ordered 2. I put the Buzbug outside (It's listed as INDOOR ONLY but I have it hanging on my patio - will not get wet when it rains and it's not in the sun). The competing brand was put inside, just inside the door. We often have bugs follow us in when we walk through the doorway, so having the unit just inside does help quite a bit. It is satisfying to hear a ZAP just after I close the door. Time flies and it has already been a year (more, actually) and the fluorescent bulbs on the competitor brand are not holding up very well. I uploaded a picture - notice the striping effect on the fluorescent tubes. But the BuzBug LED lights still operate like they're brand new. Note that I NEVER turn off these units, so they are on 24/7/365. I was considering replacing the fluorescent tubes but instead, I decided to get another BuzBug LED unit instead. A few things to note: You might think that the higher voltage isn't necessary because the lower voltage will kill the bugs just fine. But, what the higher voltage does for you, other than a louder, more satisfying POP sound when a bug gets zapped, is that it causes the bug to explode "more" which tends to keep the voltage rails cleaner for a longer period of time, so you have less bug parts sticking to the rails which translates to fewer cleanings for you. Also, they don't tell you this in the description, but the BuzBug model has SNAP IN screen covers. The competing brand has SCREW IN screen covers. Snap-in is HIGHLY preferred because it simplifies the cleaning process. And, you can easily take off the screen covers from both sides of the unit to get in there and clear out all of the dead bugs to your heart's content. Personally, I prefer to use my leaf blower. I just hit the unit with the leaf blower and a cloud of bug parts flies out the other side. I don't even unplug it or turn it off. Super easy! But if you do want to do a more thorough cleaning, the snap in covers are the way to go. Also, you can use this unit as a night light of sorts. We have it in the kitchen and it helps us see where things are when we are stumbling around in the middle of the night looking for our late-night snack or glass of water. We are very pleased with our purchase and highly recommend this model to everyone.

I have been buying this bug zapper for several years. Whenever my old one wore out after years of use, I would simply buy another because it always worked extremely well. I trusted this product completely. I purchased this latest one in March, and it's now July. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed that although it has the same brand name, the light tubes inside are completely different from the previous versions I had purchased. Since I had always trusted this product, I assumed it was simply an updated design and didn't think much of it. Unfortunately, it has been a huge disappointment. My house regularly has flies, so it has had plenty of opportunities to work. With the older versions, I only needed to close the windows and let the room get a little darker during the day. Within minutes, flies would be attracted to the light and get zapped. After about four months of use, the inside of this machine is still as clean as the day I unpacked it. There isn't a single dead fly inside—not one. It simply does not attract or kill flies like the older versions did. Because I trusted this brand after years of repeat purchases, I didn't return it. By the time I realized it wasn't working at all, the return window had already expired. I'm extremely frustrated and disappointed. The brand name may be the same, but this product is not the same as the one I bought for years. I sincerely hope the manufacturer will restore the quality of the earlier version, because this one has been completely ineffective.

I own and run a wine bar and one of the biggest perennial challenges every year when the summer days are waning, Is the annual arrival of the fruit fly bloom. These insidious buggers find their way into my wine bar and into the glasses of my patrons, the necks of my bottles, and the spigots of my beer and cider taps. I've tried the sticky paper, I've tried the homemade vinegar catches. I've tried the handheld electric rackets. Nothing seemed to really take care of the problem. Until I got this bad boy! If you're wondering if this thing actually works let me lay those questions to rest. My fruit fly problem has been completely solved by this amazing device. I couldn't have asked for anything better. And just one of these units has solved the problem for my entire 1500 ft² wine bar! I literally just don't even see fruit flies anymore, nevermind having to fish them out of my wines. The unit is nice and compact. I placed it on the back of the top surface of my kegerator. It actually looks pretty cool. It glows with a warm purple light. When a wayward fruit fly finds its way into its grill it gets atomized with a most satisfying "POP!" (You'll have to forgive me if it sounds like I get a little bit of a sadistic rush from that sound. But if you knew the trepidation and irritation that these hell spawn used to cause me, you would understand.) Don't worry, it's not so loud that it will be distracting to your workspace. It's just loud enough to remind you that it's working. And let me tell you, if there was any doubt that the change in fruit fly atmosphere at my wine bar was a direct result from this item, I would only just need to show you what the cleaning rag that I use to wipe the top of the kegerator looks like after I run it across the surface adjacent to where the zapper lives. There's a fine, slightly black "dust" that accumulates there - clearly from the obliterated remains of the unfortunate varmints that met their demise between the bars of this arthropodic death device. Just as a little tip - I make it a habit of leaving an open-top bottle of apple cider vinegar right next to the zapper, just to increase the enticement of the area to the flies. I can't say how much it helps because I've never gone without it, but I'm sure it increases its effectiveness. I'm curious as to how well this thing would work for mosquitoes, house flies, and other nuisances. Considering how well it has done for fruit flies, I would guess pretty well. It would definitely be worth a try. But if fruit flies are your issue then let me tell you, you've found the solution.

It works but the LEDs are not very bright so it doesn't attract a lot of insect unless all the other lights are off. Other than that, it's great it does work when they fly near it and you get that satisfying Zap sounds

This is a review of ten days of the product. It did what it claims to do. It has powerful zapping power. I tested by dropping a dead moth into it. and it buzzed and disintegrated it. It was nothing left of it. Nothing to clean up. However, for what I needed for it was not needed. I have an issue with panty moths. I thought this would help however the opposite is true. Pantry moths are not attracted to light. They like darkness. This unit has bright LEDs. Nevertheless, I had to return it.

Definitely kills bugs but doesn't attract them as one would expect. Quiet. Good quality. Still good to have on. Plugs in wall

I was concerned at first that it didn’t one bug but after a few days it got a lot. Noise level is tolerable with the zaps and the zap sound is louder as bigger insects enter it like moths. It’s very effective for everything except mosquitoes. I think mosquitoes figured it out, but it works well for other insects.

Sorprendentemente sorpreso da questa lampada in se, a cui non ho mai dato un grande peso in precedenza alla sua effettiva capacità di uccidere gli insetti, avrei detto che fosse solo un palliativo alla nostra sofferenza alle zanzare. E invece devo ricredermi perché se non è proprio una sterminatrice, quando la accendiamo sia di giorno che di notte, devo confessare che funziona veramente, e il ronzio fastidioso nelle orecchie di notte specialmente non lo sentiamo più. All'interno della confezione ci sono una spazzolina per la pulizia, e una cordicella in metallo per appenderlo alla parete, o soffitto. Per quanto mi riguarda ampiamente promossa.

Después de haber leído alguna reseña al respecto, me quedaban algunas dudas sobre este "matabichos" UV. Ahora que lo tengo, he podido comprobar que algunos comentarios están basados en suposiciones e informaciones incorrectas. Yo tenía otro aparato parecido en tamaño y con características aparentemente similares a este, pero basado en tubos fluorescentes UV (el clásico). Ahora que tengo el Buzbug, puedo compararlos objetivamente. En las fotos intento dejarlo claro. En esas fotos he pixelado la marca y modelo antiguos, ya que no es un aparato que funcione mal, sino que simplemente es de una generación anterior. - Potencia: He visto que alguien decía que tenía un aparato de antigua generación que gastaba menos energía que éste. Pues no sé si tendría algún modelo muy pequeño, porque el mío (del mismo tamaño que el BuzBug) tenía dos lámparas estándar de 8W cada una, con una potencia total de 16W, como se indica en la etiqueta del producto. El Buzbug tiene una potencia de 12W (como se indica también en la etiqueta), así que está claro que consume menos que el "clásico". - "Iluminación": Es importante saber que la luz que importa está en el espectro NO VISIBLE. Que "veamos" que ilumina más o menos en el espectro visible no significa más que una importante parte de la potencia se desperdicia en ese espectro visible para el ojo humano (que no es el que atrae a los mosquitos). Las luces led se basan en un principio totalmente distinto al de las luces fluorescentes, y pueden diseñarse para valores muy concretos del espectro luminoso. De hecho, el Buzbug lleva dos tipos de led para iluminar en dos frecuencias concretas (ninguna de ellas en el espectro visible). Al final lo importante no es que su luz la vean los humanos (esa luz,en realidad, es un desperdicio) sino que la vean los insectos. - En cualquier caso, por los resultados se oye. Sí, se oye cada vez que suena un chispazo que "fríe" el insecto. Y en ese sentido el Buzbug se oye muy bien. Muy recomendable. ¡Ah! El diseño es mucho más bonito que el que tenía antes, así que ahí otro punto a favor del Buzbug.
