The Most Boring Book Ever

This book definitely lived up to its name...so boring! The illustrations are fun, and the humor makes it a cute, quick read. Perfect as a lighthearted bedtime story that both kids and adults can enjoy.

As a massive fan of Brandon Sanderson and the father of a 5 year old, I had the perfect excuse to pick this up. Honestly, I probably like it more than my 5 year old does though. Great art and a fun story.

This book won't be for everyone. Some people will think that there should be more of a story line from the text. My 4 year old daughter and I enjoyed it as is. In my opinion, part of what's great about this is the idea of using your imagination while doing boring, mundane tasks, like math and laundry. The text describes what is going on from the perspective of someone who might be observing the boy sitting in the chair, which is only that the bit is sitting, doing laundry and math homework. The illustrations show what the boy is imagining, which is anything but boring. The boy in the story uses his imagination to make what would otherwise be boring tasks, fun and exciting. This could be helpful for showing kids what they can do with their imagination, and provide encouragement that is ok to imagine things while doing otherwise biting tasks.

My husband and 2 y/o daughter love this book and for a non board book the amount of words per page are perfect. The art is very captivating and she wants it read over and over and actually lets you read the book and isn’t turning pages before you’re ready to turn them. The reason I’m giving it 4 stars is because I find the book…boring…I know, I know, but it just seems like a cash grab on Brandon Sanderson’s part and i mean, all the more power to him, but personally, I just would rather read something else.

This book is so fun! I love having kids tell me what they think is happening in the pictures, because the words do not describe them. Would highly recommend to anyone who loves a god story and using some imagination too!

I have a great granddaughter that complained about being bored. When I saw this book I knew she would get the joke.

I bought The Most Boring Book Ever by Brandon Sanderson and Kazu Kibuishi for my 7-year-old, expecting a fun twist given Sanderson’s knack for clever storytelling. The concept—a dull narrative paired with vibrant, action-packed illustrations—sounded brilliant, but it fell flat for us. The text droned on about a boy sitting in a chair, watching clouds, and doing math, which my kid found tedious despite the ironic humor. Kibuishi’s steampunk-style artwork, with dragons and skyships, was stunning and kept us flipping pages, but the disconnect between the boring words and exciting pictures confused my child more than it entertained. It took about 10 minutes to read, and while I chuckled at the sarcasm, my kid lost interest halfway through, asking for something “less boring.” It’s a creative idea for ages 4-8, but it needs more story to hold young readers’ attention. Fans of Sanderson’s wit or Kibuishi’s art might enjoy it, but it’s not a bedtime staple.
