Review: Easy to use, and accurate - For many years I've used a simple manual stylus balance. This electronic one seemed like a good modern replacement, and so it's proved. It comes with three button batteries (though it only takes two) and a 5g calibration weight. It's simple to use. Press the on button, check the scale reads 0 (press the tare button to zero), lower the stylus onto the weigh pan (there's a helpful black target dot), and read off the playing weight. The display can be set to one of a range of weight types, including grams, ounces, troy ounces and carats (so the sensor is probably common to several models of scale) but grams is the default for stylus tracking weights. The calibration weight showed 5.00g when measured, and the same on a high precision chemical balance I have, so I'm confident in the accuracy at other weights too. My old 'see-saw' balance also proved accurate, but the advantage of this digital scale lies in the upper weight ranges, where the weight markings on a see-saw type become bunched together and so the precision falls. I play a lot of 78 rpm discs where a special cartridge is required and the tracking weights are much higher, just the area where the see-saw balance loses precision (I've included a picture of the see-saw balance for comparison). With the digital scale, I can now swap headshells and quickly set accurate tracking weights between the ultra low and the quite high. It's a super little device, and well worth having.
Review: Crucial for Cartridge setup - I have two record players and recently upgraded a cartridge. Although I was follwing the usual setup procedure (bring the tonearm to "float" and then turn the dial to the desired tracking force), I was not convinced this was accurate. Just "feeling" the tonearm weight I could tell something was not quite right. This is the reason I bought this tiny weighscale. It comes with a small standard weight of 5 grams, and when placing it on the scale - it came up with exactly 5 grams! This certainly inspired confidence that the scale is working properly. Coming back to the new cartridge. I had set up in the usual way, and set the tracking force to 2 grams. I was a bit disappointed with the sound. As soon as I got the new weighscale, I checked the setup. It was not 2 grams, but 1.3 grams! Using the weighscale as a reference, I increased the tracking force to exactly 2 grams. After this change, the new cartridge sounded wonderful! I then checked my other record player. Here the error was in the other direction. The measured force was 2.1 grams instead of 2 grams. So, not as dramatic as the other record player, but it shows that the "classic setup" is not accurate and can be far enough from the optimum that it results in a bad sound quality. To summarize, this is not just another "digital gadget", it really adds value!
