Nice kit! Well worth the cost
I do a lot of network support, but I don’t make my whole living from it. So I can’t afford $5000-$10000 tools from the big manufacturers. But I still need to check fibers and Cat 5/6 cables and this unit does both very well. In particular, having the optical power meter means I can plug in a fiber and quickly find out if light is getting through from the other end. I can also get a feel for how strong the signal is. I’m sure it is not calibrated precisely, but it tells me if the circuit is in good shape or if it needs work. For ethernet cables, it does simple testing to ensure all pairs are connected right—but that is common. This one also allows you to estimate cable length (TDR functionality). Better yet, you can use it to check if a cable is live, tell what speed got negotiated and even find out of POE (power over ethernet) is active. This is something I do all the time—a basic “is this live?” test. But before I got this, I had to bring along a computer with an Ethernet adapter dongle. The screen is color and is very clear. My only minor frustration is that it looks like it should be a touchscreen, but it’s not. You have to navigate using buttons. They never said it was a touchscreen, so it is fine. FYI, the most common kind of fiber jack/plug is called LC. This kit has a different jack on it called SC, so be sure to pick up a patch cable and/or adapter that converts from SC to LC. These are not expensive.

THIS IS A MUST HAVE! It's a really nice thorough tester for home and small business use.
[UPDATE - 18Nov2025) Another use for this kit just came around. I was watching videos on guys repairing LED Christmas lights. Some use an NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) detector. I realized that this kit has a dual detector, for both Network signals AND voltage. In fact, there's an NCV button on it. I took it to a string of LEDs where one side is out and sure enough, this was able to detect where the voltage stopped. That was the bad LED! Seriously, I really like this kit and do highly recommend it. After having this now for a few months and using it with every cable I ran (and i ran, so far, over 16 CAT6 Solid Copper) I can say that this product is just excellent! Sometimes I had unexpected issues with the crimping tool, where, it seemed ok, but when on the network, it would totally fail or be "glitchy." This meter was able to detect the issue! Not only that, where the little cheap tester would say that the cable had good continuity, this meter could detect that it did not. In fact, I had a few times where the crimper caused a very light "short" in the wires (or even crossed the wires in the connector). Not only was this meter able to find it, but it was even able to confirm which end of the cable had the issue. Another feature that turns out to be seriously necessary is the Length test. I had a few cables that the meter reported as having a short. But where!? Well, what I did was to test length from each end, one at a time. The numbers reported revealed where the short was! Example, from one end, let's say, 6 wires tested the correct length, while 2 were not right, or tested as crossed or open. But test at the other end, now we had numbers that revealed which side the issue was on. In one case, I had a run that was about 40'. I hadn't noticed that the cable got a twist (kink) in it, but when the cable failed, the tester, using length from each end, revealed approximately where it was. I pulled the cable and sure enough, the kink was visible! I was able to cut the wire there, put a new connector on and problem solved. I also got to use the scanner function as my markers on a few cables fell off. I was easily able to confirm which wire at the wall was the wire going into the router. It just works! Seriously, if you are going to do a big job, like I did here with a full-house rewiring job, this device is a must-have! ________________ original review follows ________________________ I've had this for a few days now and I've tested cables in our setup. I'm very impressed how well this works and how many features it has at this price point. I have to do a full wiring of our house, greenhouse and garage, so this will be a necessity to test all connectors and wires. I do recommend this tester.
