1600LBS Steel Cable Boat Winch

I built an 8x12 observatory building with a roll-off roof in my back yard. With solar panels for shingles, the roof weighed about 1000 pounds and was thus too heavy to move with muscle power alone. The winch is mounted on the east wall, and along with two or three 4-inch pulleys (depends on whether opening or closing) makes for an easy job of moving the roof. An added benefit was that during construction (after the winch was already mounted) it came in handy for lifting the 60-pound outboard rafter "ladder: assemblies and the OSB sheets that went on the roof and upper walls of the roof assembly.

This worked for about a year, but the cord wasn't very strong so had to buy another one the next year.

However, durability and reliability are significant concerns - multiple customers report the winch breaking from minor use and issues with the locking mechanism slipping out of place too easily.
