Philips Norelco 3900 Electric Shaver, Storm Blue

Been using this shaver for about 10 days. I've used norelco rotary shavers since 1980 and have gone thru about 7 or 8. They've changed blade cutter several times. Prior to last few years they had the Lift and Cut and SpeedXL designs. The best for my face have been the SpeedXL which has 3 different sized cutters in the circular combs. This new shaver uses the newer SH30 heads. This new shaver cuts really good, as close as SpeedXL heads for me. Not sure yet if the shave stays as close after 2 or 3 days. I'm retired and don't shave everyday, usually every 2 or 3 days. Compared to lift and cut design right now I'd say somewhat better. The great thing is all my old cutters and combs fit this head, all I have to do is switch them out. I have blades from 8 years ago that still cut good. The battery seems to hold up pretty good. The shaver weighs less than my old aqua shaver but doesn't feel is built as well. I don't like charging stands but all you have to do is use the usb cable to charge directly without using stand. Someone said the don't have usb! This is 2026 and everybody has it somewhere/somehow! Lastly some said it stopped cutting and was trash. If you DON'T clean everytime it won't cut cleanly so clean the darn thing after every use. Norelco now only recommends rinsing heads under warm water to clean. NOTE! Use only hot water to rinse, and every week disassemble the cutters and combs then use an old soft toothbrush to thoroughly clean both the combs and cutters. For some reason norelco doesn't mention this anymore nor includes any small cleaning brushes either. If you don't do this cutting performance will decrease. I also use an electric shave lotion sometimes which seems to help. The heads need to be lubed with a light coat of mineral oil once a month. If you keep clean and lubed the heads are self sharpening as you use it and unless you damage them heads will last for years.

I've had a 1000 (?) series rehargable shaver for the longest time, easily 10 years. Whatever it is, it uses the HQ8 shaving heads and the SH30 heads fit it - sorta. And I think it is a NiCad battery not Lion But I think it's performance has been slipping a bit which i have attributed to the fact that the battery is OLD. And I was right, about performance, I think this new shaver's blades spin faster than my old one. And the shave is closer because of it, I think. There are no real negatives. The charging cradle isn't as easy to use as I would like, but it may be because I'm not familiar enough with it. It's a bit difficult to place in the cradle and the cradle's power-in port is a little tight for the cord. It uses a standard 5v 1a charging brick like for an old phone and one doesn't come with it, it comes with just a usb cable. Yeah, that does seem a bit cheap, but most people have plenty of them lying around, and for those who don't, they are so cheap and used by so MANY things that it hardly seems worth mentioning any more. It seems to be built on the same design as my old shaver, but the new exterior decorations and fittings are more modern, but otherwise, it functions pretty much like my old shaver. My first shave (dry) with it went well, the shave is closer than with the old one, and I don't have to risk razor burn by pressing the shaving head too forcefully to get a reasonable shave. I might experiment with a wet shave, but I have no problem with dry shaving. On the whole, I'm happy with this purchase. I'd advise people with electric razors who feel like they just aren't getting the shaves that they used to get, to upgrade to something newer. And this is in the sweet spot of quality upgrades at a good price.

I've been using electric shavers for over thirty years. In addition to Norelco, I've also owned electric shavers made by Remington and Braun. Of the different razor brands/types I've tried, I like Norelco shavers the best. Why? I find that I get a better and faster shave with the Norelco three-rotary-head design over foil-type shavers. Also, Norelco shavers are noticeably quieter than foil shavers. Shaving Performance: This shaver shaves very well. Several years ago I purchased one of Norelco's expensive top-of-the-line models. I found that it didn't shave any better than the mid-priced models I usually buy. Pop-Up trimmer: This is the worst thing about this razor. It doesn't work very well when I use it to trim my sideburns and mustache. I find it difficult to get a straight line on my sideburns. I ended up buying a dedicated trimmer just for my sideburns and mustache. The poor performance of the pop-up trimmer is the reason I rated this razor at four stars instead of five. Shaving Time Per Charge: I get at least forty-five minutes of shaving on a single charge. As with other devices that use a rechargeable battery, you can expect the number of shaves per charge to diminish as the razor ages. It takes approximately one (1) hour to recharge the razor. Indicator Lights: This razor is equipped with three white lights on the housing that indicate the charging status (the owner’s manual provides full details). An orange light will begin to flash when you have no more than five (5) minutes of shaving time remaining. Housing Shape: Compared to some of my older Norelco razors, the housing shape of this razor is a little more square and less rounded. At first I didn’t like it as much. But I’ve gotten used to it. Overall, it fits comfortably in my hand. Blades: Norelco says to replace the blades once a year. I find this to be a good recommendation. I once went eighteen months on an older Norelco before buying new blades. The razor got to the point where it wasn't shaving very well. A new set of blades fixed the problem. Note: When you purchase a new set of Philips Norelco blades, they come with a matched set of slotted combs. Tip: I once purchased some cheaper third-party blades not made by Philips Norelco. That was a mistake. They didn't shave well at all. I returned them, and now I only buy genuine Philips Norelco blades. They’re more expensive, but they’re worth it. Look closely when buying replacement blades. Many third-party brands try to make you think you’re purchasing the genuine article. All of the genuine Philips Norelco blades that I’ve purchased were made in the Netherlands. Shave Wet or Dry: I like that I can use this razor wet or dry. When I want the closest possible shave, I first cover my face with a light layer of hair conditioner. It creates less drag too. Quality: The fit and finish of the razor is excellent. I found no nicks, scratches, or poorly fitted parts. Power Button Location: Some of my previous Norelco razors had the on/off button located right where your thumb grips the razor. While it was convenient, it meant that I sometimes accidentally turned the razor off when shaving. The power button on this razor has been moved a little lower on the housing. The location is not quite as convenient, but I’ve yet to turn the power off by accident. Day to Day Cleaning: For day to day cleaning, just flip open the top and hold the underside of the shaving head under hot running tap water (it's normal for water to drip from the bottom of the razor after rinsing). More Extensive Cleaning: Facial oil and hair (especially longer hair), will eventually accumulate in the blades and slotted combs that aren’t removed entirely by rinsing under hot water. Extensive cleaning requires that you remove the blades and combs from the shaving head. Norelco's previous design made reassembly of these parts a bit tricky. But the newer design of this razor makes the process much easier. Here's my cleaning process: Word to the wise. If you're going to do this in the bathroom, close the stopper in your sink. If you accidentally drop a blade or a comb in the sink, there’s a good chance it’ll fall down the drain, and you’ll have to disassemble your plumbing to retrieve the parts. 1. Flip open the top. There's a knob in the center of the retainer that holds the blades/combs in place. Twist the knob slightly and lift the retainer out. Note: Before continuing, it's important to remember that the blades and combs are matched sets. Do not mix different blades with different combs. 2. Remove the blades and combs from the shaving head. Soak them in some isopropyl alcohol for a couple of minutes. 3. Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush away any hair on the blades and combs. 4. When the blades and combs are clean, place each blade back in its matching comb, then place the combs back in the shaving head (it doesn't matter which comb goes where). 5. Set the retainer in place, and give the knob a slight twist to lock it in position (you can feel it lock in place). Note: If you can’t easily lock the retainer in place, or you’re having difficulty closing the shaving head, it most likely means that the retainer isn’t positioned and/or locked properly. I've used this cleaning method for decades, and it's worked well for me. Note: Some of Norelco's more expensive razors include a solvent-based cleaning system. I've used it, and I personally think it's not worth the extra cost. Charging Stand: This razor includes a charging stand. But I don’t like using them. When my razor needs to be charged, I simply plug the charging cord directly into the razor. Warranty: A two-year limited warranty is included. But understand that the warranty doesn't cover worn out blades. In addition, Philips Norelco offers a forty-five (45) day money back guarantee if you’re not happy with the razor (see owner’s manual for details). Dislikes: I have three complaints about this shaver: 1. If you run out of juice before you're through shaving, you can't finish your shave by plugging it into a wall outlet (the included power cord is for charging the battery only). However, I find that if I charge the battery for just five minutes, it gives me enough of a charge to finish shaving. Pay attention to the orange flashing light on the body of the razor. It tells you that you’ve got less than five minutes of shaving time remaining. 2. It wasn’t made in America. Sorry, but no American manufacturing jobs were created when you purchase this razor. I'd willingly pay more to see "Made in USA" on this shaver, but I know I'm in the minority. This razor was designed in the Netherlands and was made in Indonesia. All of my previous Norelco razors were made in the Netherlands. 3. The pop-up trimmer is junk. Buy yourself a dedicated trimmer for your beard, mustache, and sideburns. This razor cuts my facial hair completely in record time. It’s charge lasts more than a month of every other day shaves of my face and remaining scalp hair. I’ve had multiple electric shavers in my 91 years, and this is the best. My skin feels smooth and non-abused following my shaves. I wish I had one like this one years ago. I recommended it without any reservations. The cost is well worth it…and it’s not that expensive.

Although I have not used this for long at all, I've tested it in three different scenarios: 1. Dry Shave, 2. Shaving Cream in the Shower 3. Shave with Pre-Shave I would have to say that I was quite impressed in every situation. There was no irritation to the skin whatsoever shaving dry, and that was the first shave with an electric razor in over 15 years. So, my skin had no preparation. Using it in the shower with shaving cream gave a closer shave while using Ron's Natural Pre-Shave obviously gave the cleanest shave. My observations were that it does take longer to shave, but not by much if you consider that you don't need time to allow the shaving cream to soak in and having to clean up that mess afterwards. The second thing I noticed is that it doesn't get as close of a shave as a conventional razor, but almost as close. If you rub the whiskers against the grain, you might feel 5 - 10% more nubbles at most, but that depends on your own beard. I would safely say that all electric razors regardless of brand or price will provide similar results. I haven't used the popup trimmer, so I can't speak to that, but I would think it to be a plus for those who would benefit from it. It is a sinch to clean. Push the button to pop open the head and rinse it under running water. Charging can be done quickly, just 5 minutes if you find the battery fully drained. The razor feels good in the hand and easy to grip. It comes with its own charger, and the travel pouch is really nice. The good thing is that it has replaceable heads, so unless you drop it in the shower and break it, this razor should last many years. It is very thoughtful of the manufacturer to give you 45 days to try it out. I know I will keep mine. Why did I change from a conventional razor to an electric razor? There are a few reasons. I was running late to appear before some business colleagues on a Zoom meeting. In a rush to get ready, I nicked my face in several places. Some, like me can bleed for a while before clotting. I decided right then and there that I was going to purchase an electric razor. The second reason is that this will be cheaper in the long run. Third, I don't have to run to the store to get razors or shaving cream because I forgot the last time I was out shopping. Last, because I now can use a natural substance on my face without any harmful chemicals. I used Old Rons Barber Company Pre Shave Splash. A little pricey, but it is unscented and works great. You can buy it here on Amazon too.

I've been buying the old style Norelco knock-offs for years and they seemed to work pretty decent for being 1/4 the price of the genuine Norelco products. They typically lasted 6 to 8 months. The last one I purchased not longs ago was different and irritated my skin and didn't shave as close. I decided to try this genuine Norelco shaver. It was delivered in time for me to use it this morning. The shave was very close, comfortable, without skin irritation, and half the time of the previous knock-off shaver. I'm very satisfied with this first use. Time will tell how it lasts and I will update this review if anything changes.

Actually, the shaver works fine, and I would give it a "5", but what I had to get the shaver makes me give it a "3". Shaver was supposed to be delivered overnight, but I eventually got a notice that it was delayed. No big deal. After a couple of days of nothing, I called Amazon to ask about when I would get it. No clear answer from two separate people on the other end of the line. Both worked hard to try to help, but I could not understand anything they were saying. I hung up and called back. Got someone I could barely understand, who told me the shaver was due "any day". After more days of nothing, I called again and cancelled it and asked for a refund to my account. Waited a couple of days, no refund. Called again. Shaver was never cancelled. Cancelled again and ask for a refund to my account. After a couple of days, no refund. Called again. Shaver was never cancelled. Cancelled again and was told to wait a few days for the refund. I waited more than a couple of days, no refund. Ready to call again, but instead, the shaver arrived! I just shrugged and accepted it. BTW. It works well. : )

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend after a lot of researches. With around 45k reviews, mostly positive, I gave this a try. He tried it out as soon as he opened the box. First of in terms of smoothness, he said it feels comfortable on his face and it feels like massaging it. The attachment seems to be sleek, easy to clean, and it collects the hair in one place, so there is no hair flying all over the sink. When it comes to effectiveness, I think he needs to learn to angle it such that it gets the hair from everywhere. It did great on the smooth surface like chin and cheeks but it requires some more attention around the neck area. Still work great, just more attention. My main concern before the purchase was that it would gives him rashes and irritation. However, after a couple shave, none of those happened which is a great relief. I did get him the lectric pre electric shave too. So he tried with and without the pre-shave and it worked great both way, no rashes whatsoever. I did notice though that without the pre-shave, his face appears a tiny bit more dry so I'd pair it with the pre-shave. Overall, I am loving it for him because now I don't have to worry that he is going to cut himself when shaving and especially he deserve to enjoy the shaving experiences since it is the only maintenance he regularly do as a guy. As a by-product of this, I can smooch without his stubble stabbing my face. Is it with the 80 bucks? I think that is still a lot of money, but if it last for a couple years, and we only need to change the blade, I think it is a great purchase.

This is my second shaver from this brand (first shaver still working, but deserved to retire after 10 yearseveryday use). From short try of some cheap stuff I have to come back to philips again, and happy about that

This shaver performs best with gel or cream for wet shave application. I dislike the dry shave application of this shaver because I had to make multiple passes over stubble. New Razor with New Blades should work like a snap but they have not performed well. Took many times to shave upper lip and under nose which results in slight razor burn. Cheeks and neck area were very close shaven with multiple passes over the stubble.
