Latest Spears 801 3-inch Tee are *NOT* to spec. Not Interference fit.
These 3-inch Schedule 80 Spears 801 Tee fittings are not to specification. They do not give an interference fit. The sizes of the holes are too large. The old Spears 801 and Charlotte 3-inch Schedule 80 Tee fittings are just as expected -- tight and consistent with a tight dry fit and a good glue fit. The new Spears 801 (indicated by a squarer flange inside) 3-inch Schedule 80 Tee fittings are made wrong. The pictures show what the problem is. None of my Spears or Charlotte fittings into the Tee have the needed interference fit in the new Spears 801 3-inch Schedule 80 Tee fittings. The reducing fittings I used for the photos were Schedule 40 but the Schedule 80 fittings of various sorts I have (Spears also) had the same non-interference fit problem. This was a real pain since I had to cut up a perfectly good assembly and start again when I found that the new Spears were too loose when finalizing a large 3 inch line. This is a Spears problem. It is not a vendor problem. The new Spears 801 units from two vendors were identically bad. I bought 4 of these. Luckily one vendor sent me a couple of Charlotte ones (instead of Spears) so I could use those for the job. And I had a couple of the old style Spears 801. The labeling was identical except for one small code. They were all labelled 801 (old and new). If you buy Spears 801 3-inch Tee fittings check them out before using. The do have a different design inside, as the photos show. If the fit is bad I would recommend not using them. It is a monumental pain to have to rebuild cemented socket connections!
