Would this fit the standard size large (not a5) moleskine notebook.

Hello georgina Thank you for your question. This is really designed to fit an A5 size notebook. It will, however, stretch to fit an A4 size notebook. Is this only for hardcover books?

Yes. I have used it on soft back book and had wrap it round the full book. For full functionality use on a hard back A5 notebook.

Please could you advise if I can place round the whole a5 notebook rather that the front hard back cover?

The elastic will easily stretch to that maxes out at about an A4 hard back front cover. So as long as it's not an A5 version of an encyclopedia you should be golden.

Love this but need it for a planner 9.3″ by 7.5″ from the reviews looks like it will be too big?

My planner is 7" by 4.5" and the pouch is too big so I tightened the elastic and made it work. I think it will be fine for yours. Make sure your planner has a firm cover. Mole skin type of journals will not be strong enough to cope with the elastic and will curl up. It does not need to be a massive hard cover but needs to be a sturdy one.
