Nice size, perfectly customizable.
I've really been enjoying this e-reader. The size is convenient, especially for reading at night. It's extremely lightweight. The front light quality, though not warm, is easy on the eyes. It's fully adjustable, and the brightness can be scheduled automatically and by the hour. The ergonomic buttons are placed perfectly, at the bottom of the reader. It's possible to add an SD card to the reader, but I haven't yet done so. The menus and placement of them are customizable. There are widgets, including games, and I especially enjoy Sudoku. I'm currently reading a book I checked out via the included web browser, from my local library. It's also possible to load your books via USB or from the PocketBook cloud service. The battery in this reader doesn't last as long as it might on a more well-known reader, but I changed the setting on mine to keep it from shutting off. Even with it just sleeping, instead, it lasts for a good long time. This will be subjective, based on how long and how often each reader reads. The touch screen is responsive, and you can turn pages either that way or with the buttons. You can add notes and highlights. I recommend, because the reader feels so light, that you put a cover on it to protect it. It's a great reader, and I'm not giving up a thing by replacing my better-known reader with it. In fact, I'm losing the ads and gaining more features and convenience.

A flawed but fine entry level eReader with lots of bells and whistles...
So, I wanted a bare bones eEeader that I could use without connecting it to the internet or a particular service (like Kobo or Kindle). I already have a large collection of ePubs, more than I'll probably ever finish reading, so connecting to online stores is not a need for me. The Pocketbook is perfect in that respect. Once you get past the obligatory initial setup, all you have to do is connect it to your PC, drop and drag your ePubs onto the eReader's hardrive and off to the races you go. It's light. Comfortable to hold. Easy to use. It *is* a little quirky though... It says *Basic* but there are a lot of settings that can be adjusted, and some defaults that were perplexing to me. Like the long presses on page turning that moves the page 10 pages forward or back, by default. It actually irked me. This can be turned off though, so, no harm no foul. The build quality is fine, but the buttons feel cheap and misaligned when holding it at certain angles. Also, for the price I would expect a little more RAM installed to make the device zippier when looking through your library. As is, it functions ok but flickers and stutters book cover images to keep up. Reading ePubs is good enough. And though the RAM speed impedes loading of PDFs, they're mostly readable too. I primarily got this for my old ePubs and Mobi files though. As is, I feel like the Basic is a good value at a lower price point. It is an international eReader though, so many of the extra services (like library access) might not be available to you if that's what you're seeking. For those of us who already have a large ePub collection, that's not a con. Lack of RAM is though, given how inexpensive RAM is nowadays. Also, the 8 gigs provided on the device are eaten up by the OS. And there a lot of eBooks already loaded on the HD of classic work that you'll probably want to delete. Like older Kindles, this device is fragile, (they aren't kidding). So people who mindlessly toss their stuff around or choose to give this to a kid with grubby hands, or to their pets to chew on, should stay far away. A protective slip case should be your next purchase. There are many on the Zon that are cheap and do just fine. I like this device. It works perfectly for my needs. I like that adding an Ebook from my PC is a straight forward affair, just drag and drop. It'll probably last a long time if you are gentle with your things. 🙏✌️

This is a great basic e-reader
We wanted a basic e-reader without all of the additional stuff that a lot of them have. Didn't want Bluetooth, didn't want Internet, just wanted to read books. This one can work without ever being connected to the wifi and doesn't have any extra bells and whistles and that's exactly what we wanted, so it's great. Functionality is good, screen size is good, no backlight only front light is good, navigation is easy, battery life is good. We're all around pleased.

fantastic little e-reader : )
i've always loved to read. i used to carry books with me to school and i do the same with work now, except things have become too heavy for my back and sometimes the small print is hard for me to read (i would switch to large print if the books weren't so big/heavy). this little device makes things much easier all around. i can have so many book on me at once without destroying my back lol, i can zoom in if i want to read without glasses on, and i can dim or increase the screen brightness without hurting my eyes since it's an e-ink screen. since i can't access the pocketbook store due to being in the united states, i just get e-pub versions of books i want to read, tweak the files a bit in calibre, and put them on a micro sd card that i insert into the device to increase my space. this is my first e-reader and i really do love it.

Cheap junk that breaks easily.
Bought this e-reader and a protective case (separately) directly from PocketBook, and it was great. Then.. It fell literally about 12 inches of the corner of my bed and the screen broke, even with the 29$ so called 'protective' case. While I understand these things do need to be handled with care, but to break from a simple fall of a foot, all while clad in a protective case?! That's not reasonable. PocketBooks warrant page indicates that I'm not qualified for replacement, so I called a local repair person, they said it would cost 70$ to replace the screen, and that I should probably just buy a new one. Idk about PocketBooks other products, but this particular e-reader at least is absolute junk. Giving it 1 star, because while it lasted I actually enjoyed the product.

Nice little reader
No problems. Works well. Nice and compact and lightweight. You can use it as paper white (with no light) or you can turn the light on.

Great Little Device After You get Used to It
I purchased this as a replacement for one of my ereaders that was recently made obsolete by its maker. So I made up my mind to get out of that ecosystem and purchase a device that was not system dependent. I like this one because I can turn the frontlight completely off. No other ereader can do this. It also can read over a dozen formats that my old ereader could not. It is relatively easy to use. However it takes some time to get used to the navigation. It is hard not to hit the large Forward and Back buttons by accident. It is not as intuitive as my old device. And doesn't have some of the bells and whistles, such as Xray which I rarely used anyway. It is relatively easy to transfer books to the device either via USB cable or wirelessly via email. Looking to the future, I installed a 32GB MicroSD card. There is a user manual onboard the device and one can found by searching online. However it is incomplete and in some cases inaccurate. So I reached out to customer support, which is available via email, for guidance with the SD card. They did respond, maybe a little slowly, but that's okay. I was in no hurry. Customer support is in China and working hours are 4:00AM to noon CST, M-F. I can't comment on the battery life because after a month of use it still has more than a 3/4 charge. Battery life is very subjective anyhow. All in all I am pretty happy with this simple, straight forward device and am glad to be out of the ecosystem. If this device becomes available on Amazon again, I recommend buying it. To Amazon's credit, their AI Dog, Rufus helped me with my decision by comparing this device to similar Amazon devices, with the intention of satisfying my needs.

Impressed by this reader. Lighter than Kindler, you can actually turn off the screen light!!!
So far, I am impressed. It is very light. I don't even feel it in my coat pocket. It is not intrusive. You don't have to connect to buy books, no ads that want to sell books you don't read. Small amount of apps, so no distraction. Easy on the eyes. Did I say, you can turn the annoying LED light off! I already have desk and floor lamp, I don't need a light shining in my eyes making them dry. It has option to enlarge font. PDF have limited control but I have been moving to epub for sometime anyway. You have bookmarking, notes and highlighting. The only strange thing is, I don't know if I am turning it off. You still see the stuff about LUX 4 on the screen after you turn it off, it is same stuff right out of the box. I love it so far. I'll come back in a year to report how I feel about then.

Perfect reader for daily reading
I love this PocketBook Basic Lux 4. The matte E-Ink screen really feels like paper, no glare even in bright sunlight. Combined with front lighting, I can read late into the night without strain. The physical page turn buttons are a huge plus — very intuitive and comfortable.

Love it
My last bigger name e-reader didn't even last two years. I have a lot of hand pain and I need a nice light e-reader at the end of the day. I didn't want to spend big bucks in case it does suddenly again. I love this one - it's easy to use and set up, nice and light to hold, reads a ton of formats and I love the old school buttons as well as the swipes. The battery life also seems to be amazing (usually have wifi off and not backlit). I would buy another one of these next time over another brand.
