It rarely comes off - when it does, it's usually because I have gone too quickly with it!When it does come off, you simply hold the magnet near the floating part and it will come back. It's pretty cool to watch, and a very useful feature. No more sunken algae magnets and wet arms to retrieve them!!As with all algae magnets, just make sure you don't go too close to the gravel and end up with bits of gravel or sand stuck in-between the magnets as this is what causes scratches on the glass. Be diligent and you wont have any issues!The algae pad itself works well, it struggles on thick built up algae, but I find that if I run this over the glass once a week, I don't get any algae at all as it gets it off before it manages to grow. 10/10! It's good if you get the occasional small algal bloom and just need to clear the glass. The flanged base gets into the corners relatively well, and you can actually scrape out any algae that's accumulated there relatively well.It is very small, though, so it takes a good 10 minutes or so to fully wipe across the inside of the glass, and the magnet is good but won't win any awards, so if the algae has actually started to form strands, anchored to the glass, this doesn't /quite/ apply enough force on the inside to dislodge it, so you need to properly scrub and scrub, or better yet, get your hand into the aquarium and manually scrub it from the inside.If the algae is light and hasn't formed large colonies, then this works really well.the only downside is that after scraping the algae, the brush pad on the inside begins to smell, especially if you lift it out of the water so that algae doesn't grow on it while you're not using it. After a while you can smell the rotting algae on the pad. Not a problem with the device itself, but you will need to wash it out with boiling water after every few uses, otherwise you'll be able to smell it when you're close to the aquarium.
