will this fit a standard rose back plate

You are right - there is not much room for connectors. But I still managed to use small connectors and stuff all the wires in, then screwed the thing directly to the ceiling. AP

does the wiring junction take place in the fitting itself or do you need to put it in the ceiling?

No wiring junction we used this to merely support the cable from the wired fixing to support the different lengths of cable to each of the 3 bulbs which we placed at different lengths. We purchased a three-way connector for the wiring.
