This really works for car oil changes
I bought this Silverline Oil Extractor Pump for changing the oil on my car. High mileage means that I do oil changes every 10 or 12 weeks and jacking up the car and draining the sump is a real chore. This pump does exactly what it claims. You lower the clear plastic suction pipe down the dipstick hole as far as it will go, pump the handle at the top (it's like a bicycle pump) and oil rises up the tube and into the jug. When the jug is nearly full, which only takes a few minutes, you unscrew the suction tube which releases the vacuum and pour the old oil into a waiting container using the convenient handle. Then, if there's more oil to extract, reconnect the suction tube and pump again. When the sump is empty you can hear a gurgling noise as air enters the tube, like reaching the end of a McDonald's milkshake. The pump extracted as much oil as I would expect to collect from the sump drain plug in a conventional oil change. When the pump was delivered there were two suction tubes of different diameters in the box. Both were tightly coiled and I had to spend some time warming them gently with a hairdryer to straighten them before first use. In fact, assuming you've warmed the engine before the oil change, the pipe becomes quite flexible as soon as the warm oil has passed through it but you might struggle to get that coiled pipe down to the sump unless you've straightened it first. It's a good idea to clean the suction pipe and jug after use so that you can see the oil flow clearly next time, so before packing it away I sucked up a little petrol with it and swilled it around the jug, which left the pipe and jug as clean as new for next time. It would have been useful to have some markings on the side of the jug to show the litres of oil extracted but I suppose you could add these yourself with a measuring jug and permanent marker. I'm lucky that on my Volvo the oil filter is at the front of the engine and easily accessible from above so I didn't have to jack up the car or get underneath at all. However if your oil filter is on the sump you may still need to jack up the car to replace it which means the time saving won't be as much. In conclusion, this tool has made oil-changes a much quicker, cleaner process for me and I shall use it every time. I recommend this product.

good product
I read a few reviews after I had bought this extractor pump but before it arrived and noticed they were very mixed. Like other reviewers I would suggest placing the plastic tubing in hot water and get all the wrinkles out. Fit the hose when its hot to get a good seal. It worked a treat and sucked the oil out in about 5 - 10 minutes which is far easier than getting under the car and draining it off through the sump plug. I am very pleased with the oil extractor pump and for £ 20.00 a purchase I will use hopefully for a long time as it is gauranteed for ever if you register it online.

value pump which works well
Good pump for the money, drained 4 Lt of engine oil in less than 3mins, very quick and no mess, the tubes are a bit stiff to start but thats actually better for pushing down the dipstick hole once shoved down into engine the warmth ( assuming you warmed the engine) soon makes them soft, almost to soft as they can suck in and restrict the oil flow though I just gave it a pinch where it had collapsed, I'd of giving 5stars only after first use the pump stopped holding the vacuum but after a little intervention I discovered the little flap in the end of the pump base that should retain vacuum had dislodged due to the small rubber spud slipping through the hole that holds it in place, simple fix as i put a dab of silicone on the spud side of the flap once through the metal plate, working perfectly again..

Great product for the price
I needed a vacuum oil extractor and read all the reviews here, I was concerned about the comment about not enough vacuum, poor build quality but to be honest units from other manufacturers were a lot more expensive so I decided to give it a try and I am really impressed! Some observations: Yes the hose has to be straightened, I filled a basin with hot water and sucked it up, that took all the kinks out of the hose. Some reviewers said it was very slow, I drew 4 litres of pre warmed oil out in the time it took me to find the filter wrench in the garage, topping up the vacuum on 3-4 occasions. The advert on Amazon fails to mention it comes with a lifetime guarantee which you sign up for on line. Made changing oil a lot cleaner. On the negative side: The instructions which come with the unit are wrong. The small piece of wider hose should be fitted to the main hose and this should be fed through the cap, its this wider hose which gives you your seal, if your loosing vacuum pull it through a little more and you will get an airtight seal. I've only had the unit a few days therefore I can't comment on its durability but my 1st impression is that it is great value for the money.

5 zero's BUT.
Yes it arrived quickly even here in France BUT. 1. The piping was TOO big. Better suited to the exhaust pipe than a dipstick. BUT used a peice of piping from the water filter system from the fridge and got it down the dipstick pipe. 2. The pump supplied would have difficulty blowing up party balloons, if it was blowing. It leaked so the vacuum was non existent. It would have taken years to pump the oil out. I could have sucked it out quicker. BUT I fitted an old vacuum cleaner to the top and it worked, albeit slowly. I managed to get the 4 litres out in under the hour, and job done. So you can take it either way, bad but! or good but! It did work but not with what was in the box. Expensive for a reservoir and a funnel. I did not try sending it back as I needed to get the job done and living in France would have been expensive to return.
