Most Students need a Teacher
This is one of the classic book sets on learning to play thoroughly. And yes as another reviewer observes you probably need a teacher to set you on the right road. (As I'm a guitar teacher I guess I would say that wouldn't I?) But this book raises some serious points about learning - do you want to just riff out on your favourites or do you really want to learn what this instrument can do. If you want to learn in depth this is one of the book series that will help - but you may need a teacher to sort out the why's and what's and how's that are not covered in the text. If you want something more simple try the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series or their Fast Track series. Of its type this rates a 5 because its been out there for a long time and it's a course book from Berklee guitar courses which means its tried and tested over years. It's also often discussed by jazz players in forums as a way forward for learning jazz - although not a jazz book itself it represents some of the best material available to form a good foundation.

Very clear & very comprehensive - highly recommended
Great book!! - A few aspects to point out: cons- > the book is very heavy (432 pages), so you need a very solid stand > the musical terminology is in American English (which is more logical, and easier to use+learn, but may be confusing for Brits) pros- > While this book should not (cannot) replace a tutor, it gives good alternatives, or reinforces a turor's instructions; either way, it helps! > Unlike much of American sheet music, the print (staves, notes etc) are very clear and easy to read (almost as good as the German "Henle" publishers!!) > the way it guides the aspiring guitar player is approachable & fun too > there are a few duets throughout - this makes playing much more fun (even if it's just your tutor joining); both parts are appropriate for the relevant level(!)

Great Book
I have been working on it for a while now. Sometimes I find myself flying through a tune and thinking "Wow, I can't be picking this up this quickly". I've been playing for 10 years and it is only now that I have started focusing on reading music. This book is a great resource as everything is explained in a clear and functional way. The author says it is important for students to learn by playing music they have not already heard, and the music provided although may not be recognisable, still sounds like a good piece as well as functions well as an exercise to improve your note reading abilities. I will definitely be buying more of William Leavitt's books in the future, although this 300+ page colossus will keep me busy for the year to come.

A classic guide, a bit hard for learning by yourself
I used to study and play these volumes as a teenager, going to regular private guitar lessons each week. I remember not really liking it much then, at first at least, because it wasn't rock'n'roll or anything like that. But now years later I can see how essential it was to go through these books; you really LEARN music from these pages. A lot of the material is duets, and as such it would really be a good thing to study these books with a teacher, who can play the second parts out with you. There's also minimal explanations here about terms, techniques, etc., just a short remark in the corner of the page, etc., so it's clear to me that this book really was meant for a teacher/student- use. This 3- book volume gives you excellent value for your money, although the binding isn't too good for this kind of a book; it won't stay open by itself, so you really need a sturdy note holder or something to help you out on that.

Perfect for any guitarist who finally wants to learn to read
So, like most guitarists, I've played for (35) years and managed to avoid learning to read actual music other than chord symbols. This book has made learning to read the dots possible, opening up all sorts of new ground for me in learning jazz. It's s not a jazz guitar or harmony theory book (you'll want Mark Levine or Randy Vincent for that) just lots of well thought out graded exercises, with excellent explanations and examples. Highly recommended.

Very thorough book
I wish that I had found this book ten years ago. Very detailed and it progresses in a logical manner. If you are really serious about learning and understanding how to play the guitar properly, this is the book for you. Don't think that you will be able to just blast through this book in a few weeks or even a few months. There is probably at least a years worth for even a quick learner.

Good but definitely a challenge.
Definitely not beginner friendly. I’d recommend you having a teacher or someone who atleast knows what they are talking about to go through it with you as it’s quite hard to understand. other than that probably the best book on the market for intermediate to pros.

Good book to learn Sight Reading
The quality of the book is really good. I have used this book for 2 months straight. Progress is slow since there are lots of pages to cover, and it can get slightly overwhelming! Stay motivated and learn everyday! I put on the metronome and practice for atleast 15min with this book. This book will really help you understand sight reading, if that's what you are going for!

Hier war ein wirklicher Meister seines Fachs am Werkt. In diesem Buch stecken Jahrzehnte didaktischer Erfahrung und Perfektionsarbeit an einer zeitgenössischen Kunst.
