I use this mainly for my face all year round and I apply it instead of/in combination with a foundation. I apply it with a foundation brush in circular motions and it gives a tanned warm glow without blemish coverage, so more of a stain, but it looks natural because of that, and often it’s all I need to wake up some glow. You only need a very small amount of product as it goes a long way. I have dark skin so I use the darkest shade, but it is quite dark. In the summer I use this on my body, especially my legs and it looks really natural (and can pass at thin denier tanned tights) it doesn’t streak if you apply quickly in circular motions and it is not waterproof. It dries very quickly and completely, feels comfortable and does not transfer to clothes unless you apply it an area that’s likely to get sweaty. I have the light and medium as I'm quite fair and the medium makes me look too ginger. If you put the question to Google it brings up some rather contradictory statements from Rimmel. Namely despite their strong claims against animal testing if you click on the 'more' box there is an exception they say that applies where a country's laws insist on them being tested on animals - China supposedly being one.
