Brilliant! Despite some reviews claiming that it was difficult, if not impossible, to change the built-in security code to one user-chosen, I ordered this rather expensive flash drive and I was not disappointed. It really does what it claims to do; the code system is great, I was able to change it to my chosen character-and-numbers code (on my second attempt, it is true, but then I had failed to follow the instructions correctly the first time) and it is working beautifully ever since. I have been using it for almost a month now; it never fails to load, inserting the security code is as simple as in a hotel-room safe, for instance, and it feels really secure. I always carry with me, on a USB pen, an image of my credit cards, personal ID, driver's license and other important documents, in case the originals are lost or stolen, and I used to worry with the possibility of losing that pen and thus exposing my private data to anyone who would find it. This iStorage pen really solved my problem. It is an expensive gadget (and, unfortunately, I did pay for it the full price, therefore my review is not influenced by any offer or discount made by the manufacturer...), but I feel it is worth every penny.

A well constructed and versatile piece of equipment. I found that because it relies on an internal battery to power the buttons to enter the code there may be a need on occasion to insert the USB into the computer for a minute or two just to boost the battery enough. That said, when inserted and using the USB it powers up quickly and battery last a long time. The keys are easy to use and the lights system red/green clear indication that you have entered the correct code. Metal casing is robust and waterproof. Like the idea that it automatically locks when disconnected. Bearing in mind it is a fraction of the price of an equivalent Iron Key I think it is an excellent alternative. Easy to use and reliable. A good buy.

Very well made USB data vault with all the security anyone would need. The setup is a bit fiddly but once done you don't need to go through it again. Keyboard is tiny but surprisingly useable even ffor my clumsy fingers. One feature I really do like is that you have to input your password before inserting the drive into your PC, totally eliminating the possibility of the keystrokes being captured. As others have said, it certainly can't be classed as "speedy" but then again it is doing on-the-fly encryption to a very high standard so it is only to be expected. All in all, 5 stars from me, superb little device.

Updated as there was an error in key sequence: Having used the memory stick for a short period of time, I am updating my original review and increasing the number of stars I award it. I stand by what I originally said, setting the user code for the first time is an absolute nightmare, and that is with using the supplied instructions. But the memory stick is a great device. I will add some instructions here so you can see how to set the user code for the first time. Below I have given the button sequence on the device. The default PIN supplied is 11223344. The letter k below indicates you press the button with the key symbol. The text <enter_pin>, you substitute this for the multi digit PIN code you wish to use. Change User PIN Code k11223344 k <pause, wait until lights change, stick is unlocked> kk <enter_pin> kk <enter_pin> kk The first k prepares the device to accept a PIN code. The memory stick powers up. The first kk tells the device to unlock. There will be a slight delay when this happens, around a second or two. So wait for the LEDs to change from red to green before progressing further. A tip: when you press kk, make it a rapid double press of the k button. Test the pin code you have entered. Either [1] Wait for the device to power off (this might take some time) [2] Plug in to a USB port, wait for the LEDs to stabilise (not flashing), then unplug it and it will turn off. This is quicker than [1]. [3] Unlock the device - see instructions below [4] Verify the LEDs have turned from red to green. If this does not happen, an error has occurred whilst setting the PIN code. To unlock the device: k<enter_pin>k There will be a short delay, wait until the illuminated LED changes from red to green, then plug the memory stick in to the USB port of your computer.

Very pleased with this purchase. I've had it a year now, and it's proved convenient and reliable. Sturdy and well made. The feature I like best is that it's encrypted but requires no special supporting software or drivers - once you've unlocked it, you just plug it in and as far as the PC is concerned it just looks like a plain vanilla USB stick.

I actually can’t comment about how secure this is..in fact, I suspect very few people can. What I can say is....even with instructions it takes time to “master”. So assuming all the background info is correct eg military grade then this USB stick is unbelievably secure. Too expensive for storing songs etc but those items that you don’t want to fall into any else’s hands then this has to be the piece of “must have kit”. Not small but a worthwhile investment

This proved a waste of money as far as security was concerned. Despite marketed 12 code crypto my files were deleted or hidden. Truth is there is back-door access which renders the high security claims useless. This is fine against petty hackers but for high value material not worth the money. Paper records proved better value than this high tech. It will keep your PhD safe but not your secrets.

This is my second set of two. I have all my important info on them and carry one to keep my data in case something happens to the house while I am gone, stuff does happen. Anyway, I somehow lost one of the original ones and was bummed out. But I am hoping that it works well as I had a large passcode. I did wind up changing all my passwords which I should have done previously. In any case, I like the Datashur's security and got new ones and updated my passcode longer. It is a twitch test to change the passcode as others have noted. After 6 attempts, I got it, LOL! Another thing, in hindsight, is sometimes even if you put in the right code, it doesn't always turn on. I think that is another good thing if someone is trying the million permutations to get into it.

It is a nice-looking USB with robust security features. Since I just got it the time will tell how good this truly is. So far so good!

After experiencing some issues, managed to get resolved, and has been a great purchase. Would recommend the product!

Good Packaging and Works as described

Ich war von anfang an begeistert. Lieferumfang Nichts außer dem Stick und einer englischen Kurzanleitung. Die Verpackung ist eine Katastrophe, aber das Problem hat man nur einmal. Wer sich mit Fragen von Computersicherheit auseinandersetzt, sollte des englischen mächtig sein, insofern ist es zu verschmerzen, dass die mitgelieferte info nur englisch ist und die deutsche Version heruntergeladen werden muss. Konzept Wer sensible Daten dabei haben will / muss, hat das Problem der Verschlüsselung. Jegliche softwareseitige Verschlüsselung ist dabei problematisch: das Passwort könnte z.B. per Keylogger ausgelesen werden und eine Brute – Force – attacke könnte theoretisch jedes Passwort durch Probieren knacken. Die technische Weiterentwicklung macht vielleicht in einigen Jahren möglich, was heute noch utopisch erscheint. Bei diesem Stick gibt man das Passwort (Welches aus 7-15 Zahlen besteht) im AUSGESTÖPSELTEN Zustand ein. Somit kann kein Rechner etwas abgreifen. Schlüsseltaste – Pin – Schlüsseltaste – Lampe wird Grün. Danach benimmt sich der Stick für den Computer wie jeder andere USB stick auch. Die Daten werden laut Hersteller mit AES 256 Verschlüsselt auf dem Key abgelegt. Dieses Modell verfügt über diverse Sicherheitszertifikate, die besten die ich finden konnte. So garantiert FIPS 140-2 Level 3, dass die Daten auch dann zerstört werden, wenn jemand versucht den Stick auseinander zu fummeln und die Verschlüsselten Daten Hardwaremäßig abzugreifen um sie einer Brute – Force – Attacke auszusetzen. Ein ähnlich aussehendes Modell von Kingston hat dieses Zertifikat nicht. Ob beide wirklich baugleich sind, kann man natürlich nur mutmaßen. Genauso wie über die Frage, ob ein Produkt aus England nicht doch eine für Geheimdienste bestimmte feste Zahlenkombination hat. Dieser Stick hat eine IP- Zertifizierung, die vermutlich aber nur im zusammengesteckten Zustand gilt. Aber immerhin: wenn er mal in eine Pfütze fällt… Vielleicht übersteht er sogar die Waschmaschine obwohl ich das nicht testen würde. Nach zehnmaliger Falscheingabe werden die Daten auf dem Stick unbrauchbar gemacht und somit wäre ein Verlust zwar einerseits Teuer wegen der Hardware aber gleichzeitig auch preiswert, weil man sich keinen Schadensersatzklagen aussetzt wenn auf einmal sensible Daten irgendwo auftauchen. Der Stick verfügt über einen Admin – Mode, so dass eine Firma den Stick für die Mitarbeiter Verwalten kann. Vergisst dieser seinen Zugangscode, so könnte man ihn mit dem Admin – Code entsperren. Sobald der Admin – Code jedoch verwendet wird, verliert der Stick den User – Pin. Damit ist ein heimliches Herumschnüffeln verhindert, falls der Benutzer den Pin selbst vergibt. Der User-PIN wird nach Verwendung des Admin - Pin neu vergeben. Der Admin kann den Stick auch auf Read – Only programmieren, dann kann der Benutzer die Daten nur lesen aber nicht ändern. Für Einzelpersonen sind diese Admin – Möglichkeiten nicht verpflichtend, man kann den Stick ohne Admin – Pin zu vergeben benutzen. Die Bedienung beschränkt sich typischerweise auf das Entsperren des Sticks vor dessen Verwendung. Bedienung: Entsperren: Schlüssel - Pin - Schlüssel Sperren: Abziehen oder Schlüssel (oder Time-Lock abwarten, falls definiert) Pin Ändern: Entsperren, 2x Schlüssel, neue Pin, 2x Schlüssel, neue Pin, 2x Schlüssel Read-Only Modus: Entsperren, 3x Schlüssel, 76, Schlüssel (7 für R und 6 für O, also Read Only) Schreibzugriff wieder erlauben: Entsperren, 3x Schüssel, 79, Schlüssel (79 für RW, Read Write) Zeitsperre definieren: Entsperren, 3x Schlüssel, 85, Schlüssel, XX, Schlüssel (wobei XX=00 zum deaktivieren der Zeitsperre und sonst zweistellig die Zeit in Minuten) Also für alle „Optionen“ Schlüssel 3x drücken und dann entweder RO, RW oder TL merken. Nach TL muss man noch die Zeit eingeben. Komplett-Reset (Daten Verloren und PIN wieder auf 11223344): 7 und dazu Schlüssel drücken, 999, wieder 7 und Schlüssel drücken. Oder 10x falsche Pin. Was die Bedienung angeht, so finde ich das Konzept schlüssig und einigermaßen leicht zu merken. Optik und Haptik: Die Farbgebung ist in meinen Augen gut gewählt. Dezent genug um nicht „Bunt“ auszusehen, Auffällig genug um sich nicht zu „Tarnen“ und somit leichter vergessen zu werden. Das Blau ist real einen ticken dunkler als es auf den Bildern erscheint. Die Tastatur hat auch Buchstaben aufgedruckt. Somit kann man sich ein passendes Wort als Pin ausdenken und die entsprechenden Tasten verwenden. Die Tasten haben einen Druckpunkt und machen einen wertigen Eindruck. Der ganze Stick wirkt wie aus einem Guss und wenn man zu fest dran hebelt wird die USB – Buchse wohl eher im Innenleben des Computers nachgeben. Der Deckel schließt dicht ab, um den IP-Schutzgrad zu erreichen. Somit ist ein wenig Kraft nötig um den Stick aus der Hülle zu nehmen, dies empfinde ich als angenehm da verlorene Schutzkäppchen immer zu den eher nervigen Sachen des Reiesealltags gehören. Performance: Da es beliebt ist, Screenshots von Benchmarks hier zu veröffentlichen, habe ich das Tool CrystalDiskMark ebenfalls verwendet. Zwei Fragen scheinen mir besonders relevant: 1. Hat eine Formatierung mit NTFS einen Effekt auf die Performance (Abgesehen davon dass NTFS auch große Dateien verwalten kann)? 2. Ist der Stick schneller oder Langsamer als meine bisherigen? Ersteres hat sich für mich mit einem klaren Nein beantwortet. Es ist egal ob der Stick mit NTFS oder FAT32 formatiert ist, auf dem gleichen System hat er die gleiche Leistung. (Formatiert per Datenträgerverwaltung Schnellformatierung). Zur Geschwindigkeit: Er schlägt sich wacker. Auf zwei verschiedenen Systemen hat man allerdings auch sehr unterschiedliche Ergebnisse. Das seltsame ist, dass auf einem System die Lese- und Schreibgeschwindigkeiten nahezu gleich sind, bei einem anderen System ist die Lesegeschwindigkeit dreimal so hoch, die Schreibgeschwindigkeit allerdings um die Hälfte vermindert. Deswegen halte ich diese Benchmarks nur für sehr bedingt aussagekräftig. Verglichen mit einem Kingston 128GB Stick kommt er auf die halbe Geschwindigkeit was das sequentielle Lesen angeht, was den Umgang mit kleinen Dateien angeht hat er die Nase hingegen weit vorne. Im Alltag kann man sagen: er funktioniert gut Preis/Leistung: Der eine mag denken: ich habe nichts zu verbergen, für einen Stick mit 64GB 170 Euro zu bezahlen ist ganz schön teuer. Es gibt 4x so große, schnellere für 110 Euro und dann benutze ich eben Bitlocker oder andere (vertrauenswürdigere) Verschlüsselungsmethoden. Während andere denken: diversen Richtlinien zum Datenschutz entsprechen zu können und dennoch die Daten portabel zu haben ist super, und dann noch so Billig! Ich finde man bekommt ein solides Stück Hardware, welches geeignet ist, Daten in vielerlei Hinsicht gesichert zu transportieren ohne sich mit Verschlüsselungssoftware herumzuärgern welche im schlimmsten Fall Sicherheitslücken hat. Garantie: Der Hersteller gibt eine 3 Jährige Garantie ab Kaufdatum. Weitere Infos und eine ausführliche englische Anleitung gibt es bei istorage-uk punkt com.
