I see petkit calls it black opium, but it's mostly a neutral scent like when you buy a "neutral" air freshener. The fragrance part of the smell is kind of musky spicy but not strong, not like terrible incense like black opium would make me think.

The ingredients of this Odor Eliminator are pure water, inorganic salt, compatibilizer, gellan gum, essence, stearic acid, edible coloring.

If the cats or I do not like the scent of the N50, what can be used as an alternative in the N50 waste trap holder, to keep odors and wetness away?

It's really not that bad of a scent. but if you didn't like you could possibly use your own odor control item. The area where the N50 goes is 2"x2" (that's just a guesstament), N50 looks to be a solid-gel like substance so you could replace it with something of your own creation. It just cannot be liquid as the waste trap holder is open for the scent to release. Hope that helps....
