Is the sim card compatible with portable wifi dongle (mifi) or tethering from iphone?

Dear. Both are certainly supported. The best solution is to turn on the hotspot via iphonel. Other mobile devices can be used, but the operation and setup will be very troublesome. Therefore we recommend you to use your cell phone to connect.

so it is ok if I activate the card in my phone in U.K. then post just the SIM to my son to use in his phone already in US

it is advisable to activate it in the US or alternatively try and chat with the support people via Whatsapp and they will be able to answer all your questions. However, you need to provide them first with the purchase order number before they can address your concern.
