The top flips up and there is a diamond shape to put tablet in and a blade to cut, push down on lid to cut tablet, I feel that this would have been better if the blade went across the diamond, its better for smaller pills and the hinge is a bit flimsy. That part also lifts out to store pills on the go. The bottom part is what I wanted it for it unscrews, you put your tablet in, screw it back up and it crushes them, I find with bigger tablets I need to unscrew a bit the retighten a couple of times to get a nice even crush. Its up to you whether you crush into manageable lumps or powder. Sometimes it can be hard to align the screw thread and it takes a few goes.
