Before the era of overpowered PCs and home consoles, there was a time when video-game enthusiasts could only experience the very best and the most challenging in places called "arcades". In these locations, players of all ages and origins gathered to take their passion to a level no consumer grade hardware could. The arcades of the early 90s were a highly competitive environment where publishers only had a few seconds to catch a player's attention, and more importantly their quarters. It was during that time that a young company named Capcom managed to elevate itself above the competition and turn itself into an icon. This book is an engineering love letter to the platform that allowed this metamorphosis. If you have always wanted to learn about the machine behind the legendary CPS-1 titles Street Fighter II, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and Final Fight, the "Book of CP-System" is for you. Inside, you will find the hardware of the CPS-1 described and explained in excruciating detail. The software is also covered with a fully detailed modern pipeline, turning code and assets into ROMs . Jump in and discover a world of one hundred explanatory illustrations, sprinkled with typos and broken English to remind you this isn't just a dream! Review: A Wonderful Surprise - I was not at all familiar with the CP-SYSTEM. I did not play the games that were deployed on these hardware systems. But I was curious to learn about them. There is a fair amount of quite obscure hardware and software technical detail in this book. And it is clear that the teams who originally worked on these systems put in tremendous amount of work. Yet one cannot escape the sense of fun, not just from those who played these games, but also from all the people who worked on these systems. If you are at all interested in how these systems came to be, and how they overcame technical limitations of their age, I would very much recommend this book. While the systems described in this book are technologically obsolete by today's standards, we should all be so lucky to be imbued by the spirit that inspired the original teams to overcome the technological limitations of their age, and deliver products, which at the time seemed impossible. Review: Excellente publication. - Rarement vu un livre aussi riche et précis sur le sujet. Bravo à son auteur !

"Excruciating detail" is not hyperbole
A reader is better served by some cursory knowledge of electronics to get the most out of this book; for a software person most of those details are what I imagine salad making is to a botanist. The book is evidently a labor of love, with numerous diagrams and pictures and plenty of historical trivia.

Wonderful
A very impressive book, perhaps back in the day it would have been a replacement for Capcoms internal technical documentation if Capcom sold their CPS systems to English speaking software companies to develop new games. It would have been nice to use this to write a new CPS game. On a level far above other technical books. I will definitely be buying Fabien's other books. I will definitely also be waiting and buying any future books from Fabien.

Brilliant
This is a great description of the history of the CPS arcade platform as well as technical details of how it works and how to code for it. This kind of book is invaluable for developers interested in home-brew, emulation or hardware.
