One cannot get quite the same sharpness of definition as one can with Conte. However it is much cheaper, glides across the paper more easily and blends with other chalks and pastels beautifully. I prefer it to traditional charcoal as it doesn't snap or disintegrate when using it. I used compressed charcoal with my students at school for a the reasons given.
