Sketching People: An urban sketcher's guide to drawing figures and faces : Chapman, Lynne: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Art book heaven! - This book is art book heaven, it is totally different to any other book on the subject I have ever seen and this is why. It totally speaks to the beginner, i.e. me, yet has lots of innovative ideas to keep you learning once you have mastered the basics. I'm going to start at the page that says 'I can't even draw stick men!!' because that's where I'm at, or later on a part about drawing when you can't compare sizes. I love the innovative style of the book, Lynne encourages us to draw in different colours, such as what happens when you change a black drawing pen for blue and the results are lovely! She also suggests things like not colouring in every part of a sketch. Now when I was at school you just didn't do that, no bits of white must show through on your finished painting, but Lynne shows us how to do this and its refreshingly lovely. She also crowds her drawings and draws bits on top of each other. That wasn't allowed at my school either but its lovely. In short, this book is a joy to look at and has loads to teach everyone, go and grab yourself a copy! Review: Excellent introduction - I have been considering starting to do more plein-air quick sketching and found this book to be a perfect launch pad to encourage me to get started and stop dithering about it. It provides details that encourage group activities where a few like minded sketchers can work together to minimise the self conscious feeling that you get when working alone within a group of people or in a crowded street. To date I have mainly relied on my camera used in a walk about situation snapping likely scenes for sketching at home in a more controlled manner but this book has inspired me to be more adventurous and get out there and get sketching from real life scenarios. Recommended reading for anyone interested in progressing their sketching in this direction.

Fantastic resource
As a beginner at watercolour (with no intention of attempting to sketch/paint people)...I somehow bought this as my first art book, and absolutely love it...and can now tackle sketching people! Love all the drawings/sketches and the useful hints and tips ...concise and not overwhelming for a beginner. This book is a huge asset to me.

Useful
Really useful for helping you to think about the different aspects of drawing a person, the lines a persons shape makes, what is most important to capture the character, how to use colour and shading. I like the large pictures and the notes next to them so you can see how the techniques and colours work in a real sketch.

Excellent addition to the library
This was an eagerly anticipated addition to my Urban Sketching library, and I wasn't disappointed. Superb explanations, illustrations and inspiration from a passionate artist and her fellow urban sketchers with huge experience in the field. This will be a 'go back to' book as it is so easy to dip in and out of. Putting people in my drawings has always felt daunting, this book is going to help a lot!

Super Book covers all the difficult aspects of sketching people
Super Book covers all the difficult aspects of sketching people. Explains how faces alter with age, breaks down the details of eyes ears noses mouths. Covers how to deal with moving people when sketching quickly. Suggests how to fill waiting time just studying and sketching small details like hands or people sleeping on trains. It has helped me a great deal, I am never short of things to sketch wherever I am.

It’s inspiring to watch YouTube videos of how to sketch, but sometimes it’s going too fast. That’s the strong point of having a book. This has so much to offer. From how to start to finishing your work. Specially good for students. Recommended!
