Might be sensible also to strengthen with timber - perhaps fence posts at each corner. **Q: Bought theee of these to accommodate grass cuttings. The gardener tells me the bins are not suitable for rotting down grass. Any comments ?** A: Well, the construction of them means that grass can quite easily escape initially through the slats at the front perhaps. But to rot down anything, you can't just add grass. You need a mix of 'green' and 'brown' materials so that you have soft growth but something to stop the green just wadding up anaerobically. So I'd suggest you can use these bins if you add other materials (suitably chopped up) and don't mind a bit of escaping grass? **Q: Is it suitable for rotting down grass cuttings** A: As long as you mix the cuttings with other materials it should be fine. This bin is quite large- which is good for generating heat- but be aware that it does take up a lot of room. **Q: What size and type screws do we need? Ours also came without them!** A: I seem to recall that the size is 1500x1000x600 high. The compost bin is manufactured in such a way, as to allow the unit to be assembled through a series of notches, allowing the unit to be clipped together. All of the notches are ready made and the unit clips together quite easily. I didn't receive any screws in my pack, so I provided my own, and they are necessary. The sloping slats on the front of the compost maker, however, are not screwed, as the front slats need to be removed to access the compost with a spade or garden fork.I have had my unit for three years at the allotment, and it is still as good as new, showing no signs of deterioration. I hope that the foregoing information is of some benefit to you. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good product and prompt delivery *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 11 July 2019* this was ordered on Tuesday and arrived Thursday, it arrived in a bundle securely banded with the ends protected with cling film, being timber it's not practical for it to be boxed or wrapped, the packet of screws were inside the wrapping.I unwrapped it on arrival to let it dry out and found no damage to the wood, there are no instructions but you only need to look at a picture of it to work out how it goes together. All in all well pleased with the product and delivery, will buy again when I am ready for another one. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Solid Bin *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 31 March 2014* As a very experienced gardener I reckon this is the best commercial compost bin I have seen.* The wood is thick enough - too many bins are flimsy and rot through within a couple of years. These are proper thick planks.* It is easy to assemble. Two bins took me half an hour each (would have been faster but it was in an awkward space).* It is large enough (the extra-large size). Most bins are far too small.* The spaces between slats mean a lot of air will get in. This will mean getting a decent temperature to kill weed seedlings will be hard (hence 4 not 5 stars), but it does mean the compost is unlikely to get too wet and anaerobic.* The price is very reasonable compared to most bins. The wood and time to make one from scratch would cost almost as much.Instructions are included and worth reading through before you start but it is easy enough. You need a drill, because for some reason the side supports are not pre-drilled for the screws. A hammer or mallet is also useful because the joints are a tight fit.Other reviews have complained the wood was wet but both my packs were well wrapped and perfectly dry.I've put mine on breeze-blocks because having the wood in direct contact with the ground would make it rot faster. The flat base also makes assembly much easier. ### ⭐⭐⭐ It works *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 13 July 2024* The good: I have several compost bins, including hot bins and rotary bins. This one despite its simplicity has worked very well, it is quite large and it has produced compost quickly. This is the second one I've bought and I have no doubt it'll function just as well as the first one.The bad: it has become the norm nowadays that when you order something, you end up spending too much time poring over illegible instructions trying to assemble a product with bags of nuts and bolts. In this case they haven't even bothered, there are no instructions, nor have they included the screws you need (30 or so 30mm screws).
