Hi. Should the wheels move freely along the axel when assembled or should there be some sort of spacer? Blind so printed instructions of no use.

it works well for me, neatly assembled and rolls properly. I use it on a carport and it never caused an issue. amazingly good product for less money and great for ABS and Arms. Make sure you check the you tube videos to conduct the training properly. Over doing / stretching will demotivate you and cause pain on arms and Abs.

Never thought about the carpet!....would a yoga mat work?

I'm very into fitness at 72 and would like a stronger core. Would this be too demanding? (planks are no problem)

That's very difficult to answer I'm afraid. You are the one who knows your fitness more than anyone else and your strengths and capabilities. However for an average 72 year old I would advice against using this product as it is an advanced training technique. I hope that helps - Jenny
