Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 Medium Spinning Rod (2 Piece)

Have an Ugly Stik boat rod already, so knew what to expect. Was not disappointed. An extremely sturdy and capable rod. Quite striking looking colour scheme too. Plenty has been written already about this virtually unbreakable rod which represents excellent value for money, so all I will say is believe it! Has a nice action and can cast my most commonly used lures a good distance. I use mine with lures typically in the 20-30 gram category, with an elderly Mitchell fixed spool loaded with 10lb mono line and have caught Bass, Mackerel and Pollack from both boat and whilst coastal rock fishing. Only criticism - it comes without a bag. For a few £’s more, this would be a worthwhile addition. Also, an observation rather than criticism - the reel seat is relatively small and some reels (the foot) may not fit.

This was my first lure rod, I have caught a bit of everything on it and it handles whatever I try like a champ. Caught everything from roach to sea bass on this thing and I honestly cannot complain.

Purchased this as a present so it has not been used, the reason for 4 stars is the reel seat, it fits underneath the hand grip which "looks" as if it will cause future problems.

This breaks down into 2 x 3ft sections and is perfect for putting in the back of the van without getting in the way. It's a great all rounder having been used in the sea for bass and on the canal for pike. It casts all sorts of lures of varying weights with minimal effort, with a well balanced reel it's a pleasure to use. I find it has great strength despite its short length yet brilliant sensitivity and with softness to play fish without putting pressure on the terminal tackle. I've had a few occasions where I've been snagged and I've ended up testing the rod strength to the extreme, almost bending double whilst dislodging and rescuing my lures. It's great fun, highly recommended.

I have used this rod twice thus far. Once in the Bristol Channel and once on the Skerries. The rod is highly sensitive to bites but tough enough to wind fish in. The last occasion I used this was on the Skerries, English Channel, for plaice fishing. The rod showed the delicate first bites of the plaice remarkably well. The biggest I caught was just under 3lb and the rod handled very well. I used an Ambassador 7000c Synchro loaded with 30lb breaking strain with the terminal tackle length provided by Fleuro carbon 12 lb breaking strain. I also boated a 16 lb blonde eye ray which again, the rod handled well. A truly fantastic rod for the money which provides excellent sport with its light action. Highly recommended.

I ordered this but was unfortunately lost in the post, I received a 6’6 4x piece travel rod as a replacement, I set this up with a 3000 series reel loaded with 20lb braid. I used this on holiday as a spinning rod using 14g to 28g lures . The rod is unbelievable light and strong with an good action that easily gives good casting distance with little effort. Although I can’t review the 2x piece 7’6 I ordered a can review the vendor who very quickly sent a replacement. I would highly recommend this as a travel rod with a 3000 size reel for spinning.

For any angler this rod is man made wonder. Be it class, quality, budget, handling, sensitivity or build it excels every parameter. Must buy.
