Inside story (1986)

Still one of Grace's brilliant albums after she had a hiatus for a while-the famous lyric "I.m back..."

Was a rare Grace Jones CD and I wasn't really aware of it ,when I heard Nile Rodgers produced it I decided to track a copy and wasn't disappointed must add the seller was very helpful and I would recommend.

On the relative obscure 1986 album Inside Story, Grace turned away from Sly & Robbie's reggae/dub to an elegant style of melodious and soulful pop in a delightful variety of ballads and uptempo songs. The 1970s legend of intelligent disco  Nile Rodgers , producer of amongst others Chic, Sister Sledge and  Norma Jean  was the co-producer. These songs & sounds have passed the test of time with flying colors.Almost everything here could have been a hit, like I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You), a mid-tempo number with clever lyrics & memorable hooks and Hollywood Liar with its poetic put-downs and witty turns of phrase. This is also the track with Grace's trademark French lyrics that recalls La Vie en Rose on the debut  Portfolio , Autumn Leaves on Fame, Amado Mio on Bulletproof Heart and Pars on  Warm Leatherette . Chang Hitchhikes to Shanghai with its sublime synth lines is a lovely story song as is Victor Should Have Been A Jazz Musician, a slow atmospheric ballad with plaintive sax and tender, sometimes whispered vocals.The catchy Party Girl has a lilting beat and expansive feel, whilst Crush is a funky track with an edge beat. One of the highlights is Barefoot In Beverly Hills, an impressively arranged composition with sublime vocals in various styles. There's another arresting ballad in Scary But Fun whilst the stirring Inside Story is a spiritual masterpiece with a powerful gospel sound. This melodic and moving title track is the most explicit statement of a theme that runs throughout her work, also finding expression on the 2008 album's track  Love You To Life .How sweet it sounds to hear Grace SINGING again after all the growling, talking & chanting of the preceding works of the early 1980s. If Portfolio is her best Disco album,  Nightclubbing  her best Torch Song one and Living My Life her best Avant Garde excursion, then Inside Story rivals 1989's  Bulletproof Heart  for her best Pop album. After 19 years of silence, Grace returned in 2008 with Hurricane where Sly & Robbie, but also Tricky and Brian Eno, lend a hand on a difficult but impressive and mostly autobiographical album.

J'aime bien cet album et je le connaissais déjà avant de le commander. Mais j'ai été déçu à la réception et je ne l'ai pas déballé : il y avait un défaut d'impression sur la page du livret qui sert de couverture à la jaquette, ce n'était ni conforme à l'original que connaissais donc, ni conforme à la photo de la page de présentation du site d'Amazon : on remarque sur la photo fournie avec le commentaire tout un cadre blanc qui élimine une partie de la couverture sur les bords, et masque le titre de l'album. Un détail, peut-être, mais plutôt frustrant.Je l'ai donc renvoyé.

Comme indiqué ci dessus ce n'est pas l'album le plus connu de Grace Jones mais il comporte quand même de très bons moments musicaux. Cet album est sorti en 1986,juste après sa période ZTT (Slave to the rythm), et fut malheureusent boudé par le public. 5 étoiles lorsque la version Deluxe sortira des presses ! A écouter d'urgence "Viktor should have been a jazz musician".

Un album de plus à ma collection et toujours plus de plaisir à écouter cette diva!

C'est avec un réel plaisir que j'écoute cet album. C'est le seul disque de Grace Jones que j'ai et je suis content de l'avoir racheté...

Anche questo album è qualcosa a cui non si può dire no.

Um es vorwegzunehmen: Die Qualität der einzelnen Songs des Albums kommen locker auf 5 *****, aber das diese "kopiergeschützte" Neupressung von 2004 nicht mal auf meiner gewöhnlichen, aber hochwertigen (!!!) Stereoanlage abzuspielen geht, grenzt an eine Unverschämtheit der Plattenfirma allererster Güte!!!SO kann man's natürlich auch machen: die CD garnicht s'zum Laufen zu bekommen!!! Ein starkes Stück!Aber---ich, nicht dumm, werd' mich eben mittels meinem Rechner um eine "Raubkopie" bemühen, die ich dann, statt des von mir erworbenen Originals, in meiner Anlage dudeln lassen kann!DANKE EMI!!!!!

プロデュースは本人とナイル・ロジャース。過去，CHICとグレースの組み合わせで実現するはずだったのだが，諸事情でやっと1986に実現した組み合わせでも在る。ギター・ベースはナイル，ドラム・シンセはバグルスでヴォーカルを担当していたブルース・ウーレイ，キーボードはこの頃からナイルと行動を共にする事の多いフィリップ・セス，ホーンセクションはデヴィット・ボウイ『レッツ・ダンス』と同じボルネオ・ホーンズとマック・ゴレホン。イギリスのサウンド・プロダクションとナイル人脈の融合を試みたのか？70年代後半～80年代前半，イギリス・アメリカ，ジャンルも超えて影響力のあった最高の組み合わせの一つであるはずなのだが，どうも製作中に不仲になってしまったらしく，アルバムを突きつける程の凄さが感じられない。有名プロデューサーの創り出す音にリスナーが慣れた為か，同時代の他者と比較して，嘗て在った音の先進性は薄くなった感じがする。が，今聴くと，シャープで安っぽくない彼らの音創りに改めて感心。中でも洗練されたブルース調のバラード，4曲目がグレースの声質を際立たせている。存在感が，シンプルなサウンドの上で強調されて好いムードに。グレースのミステリアスでエキゾチックな声はナイト・ライフにピッタリ。今ではスタンダードとして十分聴けるアルバム。ナイル，グレース，やはり凄い人達だ！アルバムジャケットのデザインもデジタルなんだけど，コンピューターグラフィックス出始めのアナログ感があって，今の雰囲気。偽者と本者の違いは時間が教しえてくれた，漬物のように暫く漬けてから聴くと，味わい深くなるアルバムも在るなと!

Just a Great album!! The different styles Grace pounces upon are a great achievement in her enduring career! This album brings the slow jazz of a Parisian artist to the forefront of her career at that time!! Just priceless are these carefully selected strings of art she embellishes and carries to her audience! Not a bad song among the bunch!! Xo

grace is the best

Wow! To listen to Grace after so long was truely a treat. Her songs still sound good to me. "I'm not perfect but I'm perfect for you" was one of my best songs from her.

I have tried to like this album but it just doesn't work for me. It simply does not compare to Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing. It lacks the funk element of Sly and Robbie and the songs themselves are just too ordinary for Grace Jones. The artwork is very creative, like all of the GJ albums. 'I'm Not Perfect' is probably the best song on the album. Information is speculating on the internet that something new is in the works for 2007. Let's hope so.
